Pre-race routine:

I had tweaked my back playing tennis the day before so I was just happy I could move when I woke up. I laid in bed debating about whether or not to head out, but I finally managed to get up and make the 5 minute drive to the high school with my wife.
Event warmup:

So as I was standing around at the start I noticed something strange. No one was doing that warmup routine of running from the starting line out about 50 yards then turning around and heading back. Not too many stretchers either. In fact .... I looked like one of the few serious people out there. So I thought hey maybe I can go Top 10. I decided the young guy with the neon green shoes would win and the older guy (had white hair) who looked like a seasoned vet would be up there as well.

Comments:

The race starts and a pack of about 15 people go flying out in front of me. Most of these consist of younger kids (11-15) who I figure are just having fun and sure enough about a quarter mile in they fall back. At this point I notice something strange. The leaders aren't that far ahead of me... and we're only running about a 6:40 pace.

Huh.

So I sort of think to myself maybe I can go Top 5 here! The guy out front is smoking but he has a freaking dog with him. Neon green and the old guy (who turned out to be 66) are up there along with a few others. I'm keeping pace. Then hilarity ensues! The old guy takes the lead around the 1 mile mark when the dog guy's dog... has to take a dump!

Surreal!

So anyways I catch up to Neon Green and another guy and there we are running 3 abreast in 3rd, 4th, and 5th place. I look down at my Garmin and notice we are doing 7:05. Hell I think.. I can do better than that so I take off. Now I'm in 3rd opening up ground on 4th and catching up to Dog guy who is quickly burning out.

Around mile 2 I pass Dog guy and roll into second, about 25 yards or so behind the old guy. At this point he's looking strong and I'm not really gaining but I actually start thinking about how cool it would be to actually win a race, something I never thought I would have the opportunity to do.

Well around 2.5 miles I had narrowed the gap and when the leader went around a corner he peaked at me. We locked eyes and I knew then I had him. Another quarter mile and we hit a hill and I just blew past him. Holy smokes! Suddenly I'm the guy following the police car escort! I can't believe it!

I make the turn for home and I hear my wife go nuts (later she tells me she couldn't believe it was me). I cross the finish line 11 seconds slower than a 42nd place finish in a 5K 5 nights before but today it is good enough for the win!
What would you do differently?:

NOTHING!!!

Warm down:

The race director handed me the sweet swag I won ($20 gift card to a running store, $25 to stores in Waynesville). I chatted with the 2nd place finisher (Man I hope I can run 21:51 when I am 66). It was a great feeling to finally win one of these things! I have no idea where the fasties were, but hey, I beat the people who showed up!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Oddly enough I think when I took the lead and knew I had it in the bag I might have let up a bit at the finish line. Since I had the race won I wasn't worried about my time. So weird.

Event comments:

A nice fun course around Waynesville.
