Subject: Dehydrate while sleeping?
Just wondering ....I have been trying to get hydrated and stay hydrated.  Right before bed, my urine can be colorless, but 6 or 7 hours later, sometimes it's more colored than I expect.  I cannot drink anymore in the evening without getting up in the night.  Is it unusual to "dehydrate" so quickly while doing nothing but sleep?

That's one of the most common things you will read in nutrition and/or weight loss articles---first thing you should do when you get up is drink a glass of water because yeah you do start to dehydrate--when else do you go 6-8hrs without drinking anything?  So it makes sense.  Not a huge deal though--I just wake up and have a nice big glass of ice water and I'm back on track...

Yes... you expel quite a bit of water just breathing.  Also, I'm generally a sweater when I sleep due to a difference of opinion on the thermostat setting.

I generally weigh at least a pound (or so)  less in the morning than I do when I go to bed.

Ha...my husband and I have a thermostat difference of opinion as well, but I always want it to be warmer!

Your urine production is different while you sleep

The human body is flexible, powerful, capable, and very much not a fragile creation.  Thus colored urine in the morning isn't something I'd lose sleep over (pun intended).  It's not a sign of dehydration unless your definition of dehydration is clear urine, which I'd claim is incorrect.

Depending on the various experts (see my autosignature for my thoughts on that), the ideal color is slightly yellow to straw yellow.  Consistently clear urine and frequent urinations is probably overhydration.  Probably better than dehydration overall, but seems like a hassle to me.

I wouldn't worry a whole lot about it. There are insensible losses while you sleep, namely from sweating and breathing. All the light yellow color means is that your kidneys are working exactly the way they're intended, i.e. concentrating solutes in the urine when there's not as much water to get rid of.

I tend to agree that the mega-hydration/obsess over urine color thing isn't the best, because there are down sides to overhydration as well--in the extreme, it can lead to hyponatremia, which can be fatal. As long as you're drinking your 8 glasses of water a day and staying hydrated during exercise, there's not much to worry about. There's no benefit to chugging water all day long and working on your race horse impersonation.

I try to drink a good amount of water before bed, because if I don't, I wake up with a dehydration 'hang-over' headache. Sleeping gets me so dehydrated, I feel the same as when I drink 2-3 glasses of wine. It SUCKS! I have to drink enough to make me have to get up to pee in the night, or else I get the headache.

Me too.  And when I do get up to pee in the night (every night!), I always take a couple of gulps of water as well.  And I still pee first thing out of bed in the morning.

I'd say Ray, lay off the giant swirly rainbow lollipops before bed!
