Subject: Open Water Swims Around Seattle

Hey All-

I've just moved to Seattle and looking for a place to do some open water swimming to prep for a few races.  I live in Ballard and work in Bellevue so I've looked into Green Lake and the Madison Park beach on Lake WA, but only online.  Would the Green Lake beaches be the best bet if I headed there?  Wondering if anyone has any suggestions as I'm probably going to head out on Wed or Thurs this week for the first open water swim of the year.

Starting at either "beach" on the north end of Greenlake will work.  If you swim across is from one to the other it is a little under a half mile.  Water is cold but fine with a wetsuit and cap.

If you find you like swimming at Green Lake, you might want to check out the Green Lake Open Water swim race. Half-mile or mile options available, and some pretty fast swimmers turn up. I've done it a couple of times and it's well organized.

Another option for lake swimming nearby is Magnuson Park.

there is a group from vo2 multisports that swims near bellevue, in lake sammamish.  Raise the bar (RTB) has ows at Lake Meridian (kent) and Seward park.  Just depends on how far you want to commute.

Thanks for the heads up on these, I think'll I'll check out the Green Lake races.  That leads me to my next question.  I've moved from Denver and there is a series in Boulder called the stroke and stride, held on a weekly basis.  Good way to train, is there anything like this in the Seattle area?  Below is a link if I didn't describe it that well.

No training series, but there is are scheduled Aquathons (swim/runs) on August 3rd and 7th: the Islander Aquathon (at Mercer Island) and AquaTerra (at Magnuson, I believe) races.

Thank you for that list! Might do a couple of those!

As for myself, swam shore to shore at Green Lake, and measured the distance in a straight line at right ~750m, which is AWESOME for the occasional open water training. I lose a ton of time in my OWS versus my pool swim, and it'll be nice to get 750m and 1500m time trials.
