Pre-race routine:

No routine as this was my first triathlon ever! I put my bike in the transition area and looked around to see how people were setting up their area. There was no consistency to it so I just did what I thought made sense to me. Headed down to lake about 30 minutes before race start. Hung out with wife and children.
Event warmup:

No real warm up. The humidity broke over the last couple of days in Atlanta and everyone who went into the water came out shivering. With a "two at a time" start I knew that there would be some waiting around and I did not feel like freezing.
Swim
  • 11m 43s
  • 530 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Better than I could have expected. I was not winded and the traffic was less than I thought it would be.
What would you do differently?:

Probably need to work on navigation. I probably swam sideways quite a bit.
Transition 1
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

Again, nothing really to compare this to. I probably wasted a few seconds thinking if I forgot anything.
Bike
  • 36m 45s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 20.24 mile/hr
Comments:

I switched from the little gear to the big gear on the front and that was it ... the front derailluer would not work from that point forward. I assume that my bike time could have been better if I had the use of the little gear. Finishing 16th in my age group when I just started biking about 6-8 weeks ago is far better than I expected. I also was very wary of the drafting rules but it got so crowded at the end that it was nearly impossible to keep track of who you were passing and who others were passing.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I get a bike tuneup before I race. I also wonder if the derailleur broke during transit in the back of the minivan. Probably need to get a bike rack.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Felt like I was at a disadvantage in this transition as my bike was in the back and you went in and out in the front.
What would you do differently?:

Be more confident that I have everything that I need.
Run
  • 23m 45s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile was murder on the legs and I think a good bit of that was not practicing some bricks. Once I got a mile under my belt I felt pretty good. I did not push myself too hard here because I am training for the NYC Marathon and I needed to do a long run the next day.
What would you do differently?:

I could have run 7:15's pretty easily. I will push myself here next race.

Awesome race for your first triathlon.  I was on the same rack as another guy who said it was his first tri.  I was number 462, was that  by any chance you?

Regardless, that was a great time, and a particularly good job on the run.

Thanks Motivated - I was 317 so it was not me that you were talking to. I enjoyed this so much that I went online when I got home and started looking at upcoming Olympic distances!
