moldoverb - 2011-06-09 9:46 PM It depends. Two days a week I'm coached so I just do as I'm told. I'm ok with drills, counting to 8 seems relatively easy. One day a week I just see how far I can swim as I'm only a month into this and I'm trying to get ready for the Philly Tri sprint race (.5mi). So today I did 1500yds (first time nonstop) and counted up and back 30 times. It was also the first time I swam when the pool was packed and they had us do circular swimming in lanes. So between having 4 people in a lane and trying to focus on form I had a heck of a time keeping count after 18 or so. After 20 it was easy as I just started counting down.

I can't yet do 1500 straight freestyle, right now I do 3 lengths freestyle, 1 breaststroke. Makes it real easy to keep track of where I am. Not sure what I'll do when I get up to 5 or 6 freestyle before I need a recovery breaststroke....

Oh I am sure you could at my pace! My first tri was May 28, had been training for a marathon and a duathlon (May 1 and May 14) and was planning on doing my first tri at Philly June 25. But I figured I was in pretty good shape so how hard could it be to swim 1/4 mile? Turns out it's pretty freaking hard! 2 1/2 weeks to train, no OWS, 1 day in the pool with the wetsuit. My swim time was 13:05. I nearly got kicked to death by the wave of women 18-30 that started 3 minutes after my wave.

I love my Swimovate watch....

I hear the current version of the watch allows for downloading data to PC.  Mine doesn't do that but still awesome for tracking laps and distances.  I can't recommend it enough.

Just count...

You can remember phone numbers because you have become accustom to remembering groups of 7 digits. The same goes for swimming. Every 4 laps is 100 yards. Certainly you can count to 4. Then start over. If you count to 4, 5 times that is 500 yards.

You can come up with your own system. All it takes is practice. IF you can text and drive you can certainly count laps as you swim. Don't make it more difficult than it is.

moldoverb - 2011-06-09 7:57 PM Is there a trick to this? New swimmer so I'm thinking about form and what the coach said to do, and forget what lap I'm on.

I place a pack of Oreos on the deck and eat once every lap.  There are 51 cookies in a 20 oz package.  The more you swim, the more you can eat.  Should work out to Calories eaten-Calories swam= Zero.........
