Ignoring the obvious 'fit' thoughts-

I'm going just based on looks (because they're both great bikes- there are no wrong decisions here).  Frankly, I like the style of the Trek SC better.  It's just a cooler looking frame.  Plus- buy american.

Both fit very differently.  The Specialized is a "tall/narrow" while the SC is a more geometry neutral fit.  Figure out what you should be riding before considering cosmetics.

FWIW, I really dig the sloping look of the Specialized over the more traditional SC, however the SC kammtail tube shape is pretty sexy.  I happen to fit the tall and narrow spec and can get away with the Specialized.  I am currently deep in the middle of a love affair with my Slice right now, however...

I've seen some statements like this made in the past as well, and it gets me wondering if there is some sort of guide or reference that they come from? I'm guessing that it's based on your own observations and obviously I could go scour all the major brands and geometries and make the comparisons myself.

Just wondering if there is something out there that summarizes all the fine research everyone here has done previously. (I hate  re-inventing the wheel)

???

Both frames are made overseas... Trek SC 7 made by Giant and Specialized made by Merida.
