La Porte, Texas

Tri on the run
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 36m
Overall Rank = 10/201
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 4/10
Pre-race routine:

Out of bed at 4am. Downed a 5hr energy and a Mojo bar and got dressed. The car was already loaded, so we were on the road by 4:30. Drive took about 50 minutes, which put us there just as transition opened. I racked my bike and got set up in transition in our designated spots and then hit the porta-pottie before they got busy. Over the three hours between wakup and race, I sucked down a bottle of EFS/gatorade, at a Honey Stinger Waffle and a mix of Gatorade/RaceDay. I also had a Gu 10min before the start of the race. Overall too much liquid.
Event warmup:

I just a short 1 mile run at 6:15 with some pickups and then did about 300yds in the water 15-20 min before the race.
Swim
  • 20m 24s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall one of my best triathlon swims. It wasn't very fast, but it was comfortable and steady. The first hundred yards was a tiny bit crowded, but not too bad. I found some space and just focused on getting into a rhythm. It sure felt like more that 1000m, but I felt strong throughout. Navigation was easy, but once we got spread out there weren't too many opportunities to draft. I finished feeling very fresh and ready to hit the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Push the pace a little more. I was cautious not to push too hard knowing that I didn't have much OWS under my belt.
Transition 1
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

I decided to put my shoes on in transition due to the lack of practice and I struggled getting into my shoes while riding last time.
What would you do differently?:

Practice flying mounts.
Bike
  • 44m 19s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 25.24 mile/hr
Comments:

I pushed the pace on the bike fairly hard. I knew I was behind a lot of folks after the swim, so I got down and just hammered. Overall a pretty steady effort. I took advantage of some legal drafting as I moved through the crowd, and about half way through things opened up and the crowed thinned out significantly. I didn't pay attention to my power, but just focused on staying small and letting my intuition guide my pace. I spent most of the ride with a couple other TOTR guys, so it helped gauge when my pace started to slip.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 2
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

I was careful with the dismount and ran into transition. Unfortunately there's a curb without a ramp as you enter so I had to lift the bike up, and struggled to get the bike under control after lifting it. I ended up just carrying my bike through transition to the rack.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Just a weird occurrence.
Run
  • 30m 49s
  • 4.97 miles
  • 06m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

My pace wasn't horrible, but I was feeling the hard bike. I was struggling to keep the effort level as high as I wanted. I only got passed once about half way through, and the guy happened to be in my age group. Unfortunately he was cruising along around 5:30-5:45 pace and there was no way I could stick with him. Overall the 5 miles went by pretty quickly, but it wasn't fun.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster? I guess nothing really.
Post race
Warm down:

I had planned on doing a cool down run, but my stomach was upset after I finished and I decided to just get some calories in and take it easy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was a pretty decent race for my current fitness. There were a few details that could have gone better, but overall it was a pretty good effort and execution.

Event comments:

I like this race. Good venue and a very fast course. TOTR does a very good job and it's very well supported.

Updated with official results.

Still think it's crazy that a 6th overall bike and 5th overall run, plus quick transitions weren't enough to overcome my swim and put me on the podium.  The three guys in front of me were all within 2 minutes....time to keep the pressure on and keep training!

No hardware, but still a win in my book to be that high in the standings.

Nice job.

Let me know how Buffalo Springs goes.  Not sure it's much of a destination race, but it is within driving distance of us.

Great Race!

Thanks Chris.  The guy who finished 2nd in my AG averaged 5:19/mi.  Like it or not, I need to close that gap!

I'll let you know how it goes.  I expect a good performance but a tough race overall.  It's a hot, windy and slow course.

Believe it or not, it's actually one of the old school classic races that people come from all around to do.  Lubbock is hardly an enticing destination, but the race itself is very popular and very tough.  One of the only N. America 70.3s with Kona Slots for a reason!
