So I sprained my left ankle about 6 weeks ago. I have been running on it for about 2 weeks with a brace for support (to ensure I don't re-injure it) with no problems. This last Saturday, I stepped in a pothole and sprained my right ankle. (boo!!!)

I've been on crutches for the past 3 days, since I can't really limp around on my crappy left ankle without risk of reinjuring it while my right ankle heals.

I am now able to put weight on my right ankle for a short while (maybe 30 minutes) before it starts aching. It swells a little, and there's still some bruising, but I've been icing, resting, and elevating it while I can.

My sprint triathlon is on Sunday. Do you think it would be unwise to try and walk (if not run) the run portion of the race? I have two more races this season, an Olympic in July, and a HIM in August.

So you can't walk for 30 minutes without lots of swelling, but you think you could walk 3.1 miles on Sunday?  Yes, I think it's unwise, especially if you want to be healthy for your races later in the season.

Do the bike and the swim and DNF if you want to race. Leave your running shoes AT HOME.  No temptation.  Get a PT RX so you stop spraining your ankles!!! Sos orry about your luck

Well, I was hoping that it would continue recovering through Saturday and then I'd be okay for Sunday. I guess that might just be wishful thinking...just wanted to ask the people of PT if it was even a possibility. I just got hopeful because I came across a few websites saying you could get back into running right away as long as you're careful not to twist your ankles at all; but you know what they say about internet medical advice...

What is a PT RX? Physical Therapy?

I did just order a wobble board online to hopefully rehab my ankles and keep from spraining them again. I guess I'm just really disappointed because I was so elated that my first sprain was healing up and things seemed to be looking good for the race.

PT Rx is probably a prescription for Physical Therapy.

I was having similar issues - spraining my ankles regularly - and did a few months of PT to strengthen them.  It was really helpful and I haven't had problems since.

I just wouldn't take the risk during a race if they are just healing.
