Age Group Rank = 96/
Pre-race routine:

Slept in Salisbury at a friends house. Overall pretty bad night's sleep. Woke up by dog and car alarm throughout the night. I never sleep very well anyway, but this didn't help. Woke up, coffee, bagel, and started sipping on EFS. Drove to the middle school and took shuttle over to the park. No problems getting there or to transition.
Event warmup:

Walked around and talked to friends racing.
  • 38m 6s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards

Decent swim. Surprised I wasn't faster. That said, I don't think I EVER pushed my pace. I kind of just swam it fairly easy.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push my pace a bit harder. I was definitely feeling pretty good out of the water. I may have held myself back knowing this was my first Half Iron and I wasn't sure what to expect along the way.
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s

Decent T1. Took my time, but moved fairly well through transition. Definitely could have been faster but was being conservative and wanted to make sure I had everything I needed.
What would you do differently?:

Just move faster
  • 2h 58m 38s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.81 mile/hr

My HUGE weakness in triathlon. Bottom line is I just do not work hard enough or enough in general at the bike. My goal was sub 3 hours so I am happy to hit that goal, but it was frustrating with the shear number of people passing me throughout the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Work harder in training. Same story, different year, different race. I think I pushed just as hard as I should have given my cycling fitness.
Transition 2
  • 02m 9s

Pretty good transition. Fairly long run out of transition to the timing mat. I also didn't do a good job figuring out where the run exit was pre-race. Also decided to grab my Garmin out of my bag for the run to make sure I wasn't pushing too hard on the run. That said, I'm ok with the transition. Could have been a bit faster, but again, wanted to make sure I had everything I may need.
What would you do differently?:

Move a bit faster, have Garmin more readily available, but other than that, nothing.
  • 2h 00m 10s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 10s  min/mile

Wow...this was a killer. Garmin took some time catching a satellite, and hit first mile at sub 8. I was hoping for 8 min miles throughout and was feeling pretty good EARLY on. By the half way point, the wheels were coming off. I was walking the water stops grabbing as much water and ice as I could (volunteers were fantastic). Wasn't really interested in too much Gatorade throughout, but I took some here and there. I was just so damn hot for probably the last 9 miles (or more). I was definitely having a tough time staying cool. Despite all that, I managed to run the entire run (except the water stops) and could not believe how many people I was passing. I was in bad shape, but I just kept trying to get from one aid station to the next.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure. It was probably due to a lack of training that I was feeling so bad, but I'm not sure. The heat definitely kicked my ass, but I hadn't put in a run longer than 7 miles since the Boston Marathon. I kept relying on my Boston training and didn't get my long runs in after that. So yeah, looking back, definitely should have run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, water, hose down, water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor training

Event comments:

I had a goal of 5:30 going in and fairly soon into the run I knew I wouldn't hit it. But this was my first half Ironman and I was pretty close. I'll take it. I should have trained more/harder, but what can you do? During the run I kept telling myself that I wasn't sure I'd ever do another half, let alone full. Well, that's out the window as I'm looking forward to the next one (not sure when yet). I know what I need to do for the next's just a matter of doing it. I know I have the ability to be much faster, but it's the work ethic holding me back. If I ever harness my potential, I know I can be much faster.

Can't wait for the next one!
