Subject: 2006 Kona lottery open!

Sorry if this is a re-post but I didn't see it on the first few pages of posts.

2006 Ironman Lottery Application Now Available

It has been the answer to many-a-prayer. It has changed more than a few lives. It has allowed “everyman” to become an Ironman. “It” is a coveted “win” in the Ironman Lottery, and the 2006 Ford Ironman World Championship Lottery application is now available.

* * * * *

Thanks to the vision of Ironman founder John Collins, who insisted that a system be maintained to allow the "common man" a chance to compete in this great race, 200 far-from-common age-groupers will join the rest of the 1,800 strong in Kailua Bay on October 14, 2006 for the Ford Ironman World Championship.

The Ford Ironman World Championship selects 200 athletes each year to participate through a lottery system. The Ford Ironman World Championship is regarded as one of the world’s most challenging endurance events, and more than 50,000 athletes compete for one of the valuable qualifying spots at the 26 Qualifiers around the world.

As part of the lottery process Ironman established The Passport Club in 1990 which offers athletes from around the world many benefits, including doubling the chances to be selected through the lottery.

There will be 150 lottery slots available to the U.S. applicants. (Only U.S. Citizens will be entered.) 100 names will be drawn from the Passport Club, and an additional 50 names will be drawn from the U.S lottery applicants and any unselected Passport Club members.

There are 50 lottery slots available to international applicants. (U.S. Citizens will not be entered.) 25 names will be drawn from the Passport Club, and an additional 25 names will be drawn from the International Applicants and any unselected Passport Club members.

Lottery selections will be available on April 15, 2006 at 12:00pm EST on Ironmanlive.com.

Athletes who are SELECTED through the Ironman Lottery must have completed a WTC sanctioned event within one year of the 2006 Ford Ironman World Championship to validate his/her lottery slot.  Lottery winners should plan on completing the validating race before August 31, 2006 and all validating information should be received in the Kona Race Office by August 31, 2006.  Failure to comply will result in forfeiture of the lottery slot.

Physically Challenged Applicants (PC LOTTERY)

Five names will be drawn for the October 14, 2006 Ford Ironman World Championship from the total applicants applying in the following Physically Challenged categories.

If you would like to apply for the Physically Challenged Lottery, you must register for the lottery, and contact the Kona office to notify them that you are a PC athlete. Athletes are required to submit with their application:

• Medical description of physical disability from primary care physician.
• A letter from his/her physician validating athlete’s fitness and ability to meet the physical demands of an Ironman event.
• A 12 month triathlon resume.

Don't know how many enter the lottery but I do know that...

YOU CAN'T WIN IF YOU DON'T PLAY!

I'll at least toss my $35 in and will probably go the extra $50 for the "Passport Club" just for the extra opportunity.  Of course I'd much prefer actually qualifying but that is a few years off at least.

I see you have to actually complete a WTC race now, not just a "1/2 iron or greater".  So you have to do an IM or a 70.3.  Probably not the end of the world if you get in through the lottery, but a little more restrictive than before the split with USAT.

What other options were there besides a 1/2 IM or IM?

Dropped my $35 in.
Do they at least send you an official looking rejection letter if you aren't selected?

I think JohnnyKay's point is that it used to be any 1/2 Iron or Iron distance race would count. Now it has to be a WTC-sponsored race (70.3 or IM). So, for example, Wildflower wouldn't count anymore.

I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate, though. It could be that as long as the race is "accepted" by WTC as qualifying (i.e. 1/2 Iron distance or longer), it doesn't have to be "owned" by WTC.

But I'm by no means an authority on that.

Edit: Went back and read the notice you posted. It sure does say "WTC sanctioned" - I don't see how Wildflower would count with that wording...

That's what the study says. Which is fine with me since I am slated to do a HIM and IM in the first half of next year. All this means is that with fewer people applying, it increases our odds of hitting the ultimate lottery.

From what I've read, it's a 1/37 chance of getting a slow. So if that's the case... that means that between now and 65 I should finally get a chance!

I'm entering the lottery!!!!!!!!  It's the only way I will ever get there!

A guy in my Tri Club that I swim with won a slot this year.  I'll have toa sk him if he was in the Passport Club.

It's open till Jan or Feb so there is no rush.  I'll probably throw some cash at it this fall.  The lottery is in April so you basically need to start your training for next season as if you are going to get a slot.

I downloaded the app from the web after reading the essay requests.

Does anyone know if these items are important in the selection process? (Moving story, other physical accomplishments, etc).

Or is this truly a "lottery" with the luck of the draw?

Thanks.

Can of worms my friend...boring people don't make for good television.  Although I wasn't aware that there was anything to the "application" other than registering on Active.com.  Where did you find this questionaire?

All the questions appeared in the "Participant Information" section.

I may have hit the wrong button.

These questions included the usual address, etc., but right after, it had the place to apply for Passport Club and then "Personal Information."

In Personal Information, the application asks Personal Achivements and Biography, Othe Athletic Accomplishments and Athletic Background, Educational Background, Occupation...."

Did you see any of that?

I am definitely applying through the lottery and passport. (It is doubtful that my IMAZ time will see me to Kona...LOL)

If you go to Active.com, the questions are on the registration there. Only problem is you can only enter 250 characters (not words) for each reply, so I spent about twenty minutes editing down my answers.
