Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30AM and packed the truck. Grabbed some pop tarts and some Gatorade and drove to the race.
Swim
  • 36m 36s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

Finally a right side buoy course and the damn sun is shining I can't see for crap! The start was a long wade that chewed up a good minute. Not happy about that but everyone got to enjoy it. The transition was at the top of the hill which impacted my time since I was closer to 34 min out of water. Wetsuit strippers were good!
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster and run to transition point.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Slow swim time gave way to faster transition...
Bike
  • 3h 01m 31s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Other than the big hill coming out of the park it was relatively tame. First 20 mi were great not a ton of effort. Miles 30- 50 were into wind and the wind definitely picked up. Had trouble staying aero due to lower back and neck issues. Legs felt good the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Look at different setup to relieve back. Take in more nutrition as well.
Transition 2
  • 02m 44s
Run
  • 2h 45m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

TRAINWRECK city. I took off on run and got 50 yds up hill and wheels started coming off. Walked rest of hill and turned into first loop. Made it about 100 yds and had nothing. Really struggled breathing the entire walk run... Never experienced anything like it. Could not run for more than a few minutes at a time. Still don't feel right breathing today.

Not sure in I overdid it, didn't take in enough fuel or have a chest issue ( have had issues since cold in April). But that was a run to forget.
What would you do differently?:

Run!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around had some food and drove home

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run. This one is going to haunt me a little. It was my first one but I felt adequately prepared to finish it around 6 hours. I knew run would be wild card but I did not expect the day to unfold like it did. Overall I am disappointed but I am damn proud to have don't it in the end. My performance will require another crack at it. Likely not this race though....

I shared your experience last year at my first 1/2 in Racine. Good on you toughing it out! Walk/slogging 13.1 is a looong time to question yourself and fill your head with doubts. Congrats on your race and luck in the future!

I think you did good Jerry. Dont worry about the run. It really is a very hard run for a HIM. The important thing is you looked fast out there when i saw you!
