"I am surprised by all the posts saying it is the athlete's responsibility to know the course.  I didn't know this was a rule. "

Most athletes don't know it is a USAT rule, and I always make a point of announcing it when I am announcing a triathlon.

It's in the USAT handbook/rulebook- an interesting little book to thumb through when you get one in the mail with your USAT membership. The helmet chinstrap rule is another gem of knowledge in there... I've seen referees disqualify athletes for both.

Rule or no rule, if a race director can't get his act together enough to properly mark a course, he needs to quit directing races.

If volunteers are not required to know the course and direct athletes, they should be required to answer "I don't know" when asked about the course route.

I was in the same race and met the leaders coming out of the park as I was coming in on the bike, had me confused because in the pre-race meeting the RD stated the run coarse stayed inside the park and also it would go along the top of the dam.  I was not sure what had happened.  The turns were marked with yellow arrows on the asphalt.  I guess if the volunteers were telling me one thing and the arrows another, it would be hard not to follow the direction of the volunteers and also the leader of the race.

the turns were indeed marked with yellow I've been told. As I said in my OP this was soley my fault, I did not see the yellow markers however, nor did any of the other athletes first off the bike. I was confused, asked for help from a volunteer, and received incorrect information.

Again, I know where all the blame falls, which is on me.

What would you say about a bike course  that was closed before the cut off time described  in an athlete guide?

I do not understand why they do not mark courses better. It does not cost a lot of money.  They could give course maps to volunteers.
