This isn't really directed to Ultras, but you all run more than most so I hold your advice higher than those that don't.

I have quite a bit of experience is the 3 sports that make up a triathlon. I have only done 2 triathlons so far but would like to actually start doing 70.3 and full ironman events. I have read a few books and they all seem to lead me to the thinking of training like it's 1 event not 3. This gives me problems for my running. If I run every day my muscles feel much better than only running 2 or 3 times a week. I am sore and have a hard time getting into the grove of things while I am running. I have tried switching up my distances for everyday running. Longer distances 3 days a week, 1 day of hill work and short 2 or 3 mile distances on the off days. I jsut don't want to over train and actually hurt myself in the process.

What kind of advice do you have for training? I feel like the sprint triathlons are so small that they are almost like training themselves and not actually race distances.

Thanks in advanced,

Jason

There are triathletes who run everyday. Some guy here did a 6x - 9x run per week training plan, seriously, can you imagine doubles while IM training.

Anyways, here is the thread

Also, some people say that the running in triathlons is more about bike fitness than running fitness.

thanks for the good read. 1 of my problems is if I don't run everyday my joints start to hurt. I think it's the pounding of the pavement. I tried to just ride and not run for a couple weeks, not a good idea for me.... I will keep trying different things and see what works best for me.

Thanks for the advice.

When I did my IM, I did each sport 3x per week. You could get some more running in if you added a short run in after a bike or swim.

Yeah, I'm doing five runs a week now in IM training. Two stand-alone runs during the week, the weekend long run, plus a short transition run after a weekday ride and a transition run off the long ride on the weekend. I can't imagine doing any more running than that as part of IM training without sacrificing another sport (at least while holding a job, having a life, etc.). Even with that, I only ride 3x/week and swim 2-3x week.
