I see SOOO many wheelsets and triathlon bikes being advertised with something along the lines of the following: "Bike was used for 2 ironmans and a 50 mile training ride - total mileage is around 300-400 miles"

I see it a lot with carbon race wheel sets as well. Does anyone think this is even remotely possible? How could someone buy a bike, ride one training ride, and two ironmans and then sell it? I guess it could be a bike or wheelset that is only designed for races but I just do not buy it lol...does anyone have a bike they only race on? (aka they do NO training rides on?)

Race wheels, maybe.  The bike?   No chance.

I see these types of claims pretty often... I am always checking the used market to see the going prices on things...I find it strange how often I see people claim such low mileage on bikes when I am putting a 1-3 thousand miles on a bike every year

I bought a four year old Giant carbon bike that was advertised as having less than 100 miles.  I was skeptical until I met the seller who obviously hadn't exercised in a few years.  The tires were the original type for the bike and still had the nubby parts.  Also the derailleurs were spotless so I think the ad may have been correct.  Correct ad or not I am enjoying the bike which is perfect.

Some people train on a road bike and only do a ride before and then race on a tri bike. Other people jump into the sport and then don't stick with it. I find it perfectly plausible to have bikes with that low mileage on them. My bikes aren't like that because I ride them, which I'm sure is the same for many people on here.

On top of that when I had a set of "race wheels" I put over 2k miles on those as well. Still only lost $100 when I sold them compared to what I bought them for. Comes out to about 5c a mile with an ironman and a couple races thrown in there as well.

I almost never ride on my race wheels. I train on cheap tanks. I've seen more and more people show up on training rides with their race wheels though. I guess it boils down to buyer beware.

I put a total of 66 miles on my tri bike before selling it. I found out it wasn't for me pretty quickly.

Obviously, you have to be skeptical, but I can see it being plausible that some one only has a couple hundred miles on race equipment.
