Subject: Open Water Practice Swims- St. Louis Area

Hey! Wondering where some good spots are for open water practice swims? STL County website says no swimming in County Lakes (which eliminats Spanish Lake and Creve Couer). Where do most people get in their open-water swims??

Thanks.

If you find out let me know!

People often go to Innsbrooke or Lake St. Louis. However, Innsbrooke is private. I think LSL may be too, but I've never tried it.

Now, I've thought about going to New Town, because I think they allow residents to swim in the lake and I'm sure there's no one there 'carding'.  I'm too chicken to try it though, plus I need to bring someone with me.

You said Spanish Lake-are you NORCO?

No, City. But I'm gettign desperate and just started searching for any lake. I think I may try New Town or just jump in Creve Couer and see how far I can get before they fish me out and make me leave... and if I get some good word on where else might be good, I'll post it. Thanks!!

Earlier this year I think the http://www.meetup.com/The-Missouri-Triathlon-Meetup-Group/ had a few listings for ows practices - but I haven't seen any recently. I'm pretty sure one was @ New Town. I bet Sally Drake would know & pretty sure there's a way to email her from the meetup site. Although it's too far away for regular practice, Table Rock lake is pretty awesome for water quality. And they have this cool event every year http://www.jamesriverbasin.com/events/view/6 I'll be there on Sat 8/27 trying my first 2 mile ows

Awesome on the 2 mile, and thanks for the info!! I'll try to contact Sally. So much water around here, this shouldn't be so complicated, you know? I hate feeling liek I'm going rogue by swimming in a county lake.

Sally was running them out of the Stop n Dive in New Melle, but it closed down. I haven't heard of anything else from her...

If you go to new town, let me know what happens.

This Sunday Lake St. Louis is open for practice for those doing the tri, I'm sure you could go then.

Creve Coure (can't spell that no matter how many times I try) is pretty dirty. Lots of geese. A couple years ago Big Shark had some open water swims, but they tested the water before and it was only that one year so...

I don't know if this would be an option for you, but Cuivre River State Park in Troy has a public swimming/beach area.  I haven't been there so I'm not sure how deep it is or how crowded it would be, but I've been thinking about checking it out.  It might be a little too far out for those of you who live downtown, but it's not too far from St Charles/St Peters area.  Just another option.

Has anyone tried any of the lakes over in Illinois? Rend lake and lake Carlyle come to mind. I think there are races at both lakes so they are definitely clean enough. I've heard awful things about the water at crave coeur park which is a bummer.

There is a tri at Rend Lake, so I'm sure it's OK cleanliness-wise. I don't know if there is a swim beach or not.

It's a couple hours away.

I wouldn't swim in Creve Coeur lake, ever, and I live right next to it so I would love to be able to swim there.  The bacteria levels are off the charts.  Here's why I wouldn't do it.  I used to have a buddy who was a FD rescue diver in Chicago who had to go into all sorts of small lakes and ponds with bad bacteria counts from high fish counts and too many geese in slow moving water.  He was constantly screwed up from the stuff he would catch going into those things, and that was SCUBA diving with the best gear money could buy that kept water out of his eyes and mouth.  Swimming in there?  Not a chance.  I strongly recommend working at finding a cleaner place to swim.
