Pre-race routine:

Just got there nice and early. Very, very nervous as this was my first triathlon and IM. Was with Jim. Got our bikes in, set-up and then I was in the corral. My mom and dad were there for support.
Event warmup:

Nerves!!!
Swim
  • 1h 14m 24s
  • 3862 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was so nervous but just kept composure as best as I could. Found open after and my stroke pretty quick. Those Masters classes and ocean swims really paid of as I found myself passing people. Cramped really bad in both calves about 3/4 into the 1st lap, but was able to still keep swimming. Cramped pretty much the rest of way. Was very, very happy to see that I did a 1:14.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how not to cramp, but I couldn't be happier
Transition 1
  • 10m 34s
Comments:

Really took my time, changed, etc....
What would you do differently?:

Faster
Bike
  • 7h 43m 45s
  • 112 miles
  • 14.49 mile/hr
Comments:

Ouch! Big problems on the 2nd loop. Couldn't take in any nutrition. Wind killed me. 2nd loop was over an hour slower than the 1st. Had a very hard time the last 20 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. More 100 plus rides. Lots of hill training. Figure out my nutrition strategy as with my stomach it's a bit of a problem
Transition 2
  • 14m
Comments:

Changed my clothes, kissed my wife and baby, took it all in knowing that i was to have a very long run ahead.
What would you do differently?:

Faster
Run
  • 6h 23m 27s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 14m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Ouch and more Ouch. Stomach was very bad. Couldn't take in any nutrition. had to stop running after the 1st 2 miles as I was going to puke. Started walking and found that coke helped. I could do 1 peach slice and 1 sip of coke per aid station knowing that I was running on fumes I shuffled my way through. It got very dark!!

I finished and am now an Ironman!!!
What would you do differently?:

Nutrition, More and longer brick runs after long rides.
Post race
Warm down:

Laid down, took a bite of a burger loaded up truck went back to hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition and training. being my 1st I had really no idea what I needed to do. I can't wait for the next one as I learned a lot.

Congrats finishing your first Ironman distance triathlon! I hope I can swim as fast as you someday.  As for the rest of your race, it seems once you figure out your ideal nutrition plan, you'll take an hour or more off of your finish time.  Good luck!

Mitch,

I wonder if you are the guy I was talking to as I was setting up my transition.  This guy was telling me how it was his first tri and I was like... first tri is an Ironman?  Holy Smokes, you got some cojones on you!  His buddy was telling him to just look at how others set up their T1's to get an idea what to do.  Ring any bells?

Mitch, congrats on your finish.  Sounds like you had a tough day out there with your nutrition issues, but that's a good lesson to learn for your next one.

enginerd - 2011-08-28 8:21 AM Mitch, congrats on your finish.  Sounds like you had a tough day out there with your nutrition issues, but that's a good lesson to learn for your next one.

I've really started working on my nutrition and have figured out that It's all been way too concentrated.  I found Hammer brand that has no Gluten and no preservatives etc... and seems to be working.  I'm doing IM California 70.3 in March so that will be my first test on my new strategy.

Congrats on all your success!!
