Congratulations for signing up for a tri!

Georgia Vets was my first tri also, and I loved it.  It's a relatively straight forward course.  The bike has a few 90 degree turns that you need to hit the brakes for, and the run is pancake flat/fast.

Are you from nearby or will you be staying over night?  We always stay in the park at the hotel, and it's great.

I am not to far away about an hour, I have thought about camping at the camp ground for the night to avoid having to get up before 5am.

I'm doing this one. It's in my home town and this race (or whatever it was called many many years ago) was my first exposure to triathlon. I went out to watch it in my early teens and I can still remember how impressed I was with the bikes, the chaotic transitions and the fact that so many of them ran faster than I did off the bike. That Christmas I asked for a bike.

Plus the accommodations are great (and cheap) since all of my family is still there. ;-)

Raced Participated in this race in 2008. It was my third triathlon. Fun and fast! The swim was clockwise, the bike and run are flat and fast.

Get there early, though, as parking SUCKS. It's along the length of the road leading into the lodge that hosts the event. Get there too late and you'll have to park waaaay back.

Also, get ready for a new obstacle: GNATS!

My folks bring their RV to the race and camp in the park.  It looks like a nice clean place.

Do any of you guys have a good check list, being my first time I am worried I will forget something important?  Also do they provide the swim caps or do I need to bring one?

BT has a good check list...look on the home page.  Have no fear....you will more than likely forget something!  No fear.  There should be a local bike shop wrenching for last minute bike issues.  Also, I think you will find most racers are willing to help out with last minute needs.  Whatever you do don't stress over it.  Keep it really simple and not try to do too much in transition.

Quick list of must haves:
SWIM - two pairs of goggles (shaded and clear, choose based on how bright the sun up is)

Bike - Helmet, bike shoes, a gel, one water bottle

Run - shoes, number belt, hat

Tri top & shorts, hand towel (used as your transition matt beside your bike), decent sized backpack that can fit all the stuff as you may have to walk a little bit from the car and will not want to go back and forth.

Thanks for the reply.  I will look for the check list you mentioned.

I have tri shorts but no tri top, I was planing on wearing one of my sleeveless running shirts.

At what point should I be taking the energy gels?  I have taken a few of them before my training rides to make sure they don't upset my stomach but am unsure at what point of the race would be a good time for them.

Thanks

I do not know your speed...so my best guess is about mile 8 on the bike...that will give it time to clear your stomach before you start running.  The trick is not to do anything new in the way of food on race day.  Better to make sure you drink a full bottle on the bike.  Water on the run.

Make sure you relax and enjoy the day...

Thanks for all the advice, 2 more easy training days and a rest day till the race.  Getting more excited each day. I think I even talked 3 friends into signing up to do it as a relay team so I am not going by myself.

Man- I remember those gnats. They are everywhere down there. If Vegas put over/under odds on the number of gnats you swallow or get in your eye, it' would be around 100.

I finished in 1:22 and loved every minute of it.  Was just as described a great first race and has me looking forward to the next one.  Learned a ton of new things that should help me better my time next race.

The gnats were bad but once I got in the water I forgot all about them until race was over.  The finisher medal was very nice.  I am hooked and ready to start training for the next one.

?The transitions went as well as I could have hoped.  I felt like I was in a daze but had laid my stuff out well.

The problems I had were I pinned my running number to my shirt and two pins came undone putting it on, the shirt was tight and sticking because I was wet.  I will have to get one of those cool number belt things I saw people with.

I spent too much time messing with my gps watch in transition, should have waited and put it on during the run and not worried about it till I was out and moving.

I forgot a bucket or pan with water in it to rinse my feet, the sand in my socks rubbed a sore on my foot during the run.

Things that went well, my energy gel taped to the bike was perfect took at half way of ride and it never bothered my stomach, I had practiced taking them well riding and used the advice given to take it early so it would settle.

I should have started out the swim more to the front I was worried about getting run over in the water so started in the back but found I was faster than most of the back markers but could not figure out how to get around them.

Most everything went right, no big problems I enjoyed it and am ready for the next one.  I am going to stay with the sprints for a little bit and try and Olympic one next spring or summer.
