Subject: Too gross to swim?
Ok so my recent history is that I moved and the main pool in town is such a disaster I have to take 6 allergy meds to be able to swim there and not feel like complete crap.  It is really dreadful.  Currently it is closed for "repairs" and I have been swimming in another town pool.  I swam there last week and it was decently clean.  Not perfect but 100 times better than the pool that is closed.  I went swimming tonight and it was disgusting.  There is black mold nearly completely covering the walls in the deep end and the entire bottom at the deep end is covered with a yellowish greenish mold.  There were black clumps floating all over and black mold on the walls to a lesser extent at the shallower end with what I can only describe as what looked like dust bunnies on the bottom of the pool.

Now honestly I don't get easily grossed out but this was pretty awful.  Open water critters, little kids, old folks, suncreen, bug spray any of that in the water OK.   Mold covering 1/2 the surface rea of the pool and pool dust bunnies....not so much.  I left after 1500 meters.   The other thing is I addition to whatever I am allergic to/sensitive to at the other pool I also have a mold allergy and I didn't want to feel like I got hit by a truck tommorrow ith an allergy attack.  Am I over reacting or would anyone else draw the line with the pool mold?  When is it too gross to swim?

If you feel it is not safe or sanitary enough to swim, then you have your answer. I don't think it is worth risking your health.

With good health and enough immunizations you can literally swim in a sewer and maybe not get sick. Eccchhhhh. But if you aren't on the government payroll to swim up an open sewer or in a polluted harbor with diesel, bilge, pollution, oil and other.... ick, then I say maybe not do it.

I think your concerns are valid and justified.

Somehow I doubt taking downing allergy meds and swimming in that swill is in keeping with your goals as a healthy athlete.

After taking one look at that mess, I would have picked up and left.  You are one brave man to swim in that.

Apparently no one is upkeeping that pool.

Just wanted to say that I am so sorry that another person has to go through this. My pool (the only option) has black mildew/mold slime all over the walls (you can see clean spots where people put their feet for flip turns). The disgustingness that floats in there is so bad that sometimes I have to just shut my eyes. Let's not even talk about all the hair/whatnot that gets caught in my hands and feet. I've never seen the pool get cleaned, but a guy comes in and scrubs the floor around it with a chemical that makes me wheeze, splashes into the pool, and makes my face burn. It's so foul.

It sounds like your pool might be a public health hazard... ever thought of reporting it to the health department?

Are either of these public pools?  I would definitely report that to someone.  I don't know if there's any regular inspections done of pools, but I would think the health department would want to know about something like mold.

I'm getting grossed out just reading your post!

I worked at a pool for years and there are definitely standards that are to be upheld by law.  I'd be calling someone for sure!

I don't know where the line is, but from your description, the issue here isn't about grossness, but about safety.  I wouldn't swim in a pool of that description.

Yes its a public pool. All the locals say its been like this for years and there is nothing to be done.  I wish I had gotten a water sample of the one that is closed for "maintanence"  before they closed it and brought it to the health dept.  I get the feeling that nothing is done because its a town pool.

Also the pool that is curently closed is sometimes so bad that the swim team coaches refuse to let their athletes swim in it.

Yuk.  That reminds me of the story in the paper a few weeks ago about the pool where they found a woman that had drowned...2 days later. They said it was a "little cloudy".

Sue that sounds TOTALLY disgusting.

No way I would swim there.

Where I live all the pools are run by the municipal government.

They are always spotless...........I guess that is my tax dollars hard at work.

I was telling my husband about this, (he is a pool guy, somewhat familiar with it--) He was saying that it sounds like black algae--not mold (thankfully) the unfortunately, even if a pool is cleaned regularly (obviously this one is not!) it still shows up--mainly cause it degrades the plaster and will stay in the pits that it creates. (he put it as "the herpes of the pool world"--eiw.) Anyway, the pool SHOULD be reported at least AND cleaned, however, it is at least not mold. This is a major case of pool neglect...

Sounds like a good case for the COUNTY health department. City Health might overlook it. Hell, county might too. Here a dreamy thought...get a lawyer, sue the city, get money and start your own private pool (open to the public, for a fee) and make a killing. Hire a good water treatment company and BOOM! no more worries! Unfortunately that would/could probably never happen and I just wasted 2 minutes typing this. Just a thought : (

This is a photo I took of a waterway on the Somali/Tanzanian border about in the 1990's . People were swimming, bathing, washing food, pooping and playing in it:

Be thankful it isn't scratch n' sniff.

Socks is definitely not a man...

As far as the pool situation, once it gets as bad as Sue describes probably the best (& only) solution is drain the pool and do a major cleaning.

You beat me too it, that's the first thing that popped into my head, wasn't too far from me either. The poor women (who was with a group) apparently drowned/sunk, and no one found her (even the pool inspectors/cleaners) until two days later some kids decided to hop the fence and swim at night...I bet they'll never do that again. My town pool is nice and clean thankfully, the locker room is a different story. But, yeah, I'm not sure I would have gotten in that pool in the first place.

you definitely should call your town or state board of health because from the looks of it that pool is way too unsanitary to be swimming it.
