Subject: Endurance Fishing

Saturday's fishing report....by the numbers:

  • 3:00 a.m. - the time I rolled out of bed to go meet fishing buddies
  • 4:40 a.m. - the time left the dock to go catch bait fish
  • 1,565,321,981 - number of mosquitoes waiting for us to come catch baitfish
  • 0.0 - number of us who remembered to bring insect repellant
  • 3 - number of fingers being pointed indicating who said they had some "OFF" in their tackle box
  • 3 - number of cases of West Nile virus in our county this year
  • 3 - number of us who have enough testosterone in our system to be totally immune to any insect borne disease
  • 16 - number of pairs of red alligator eyeballs we counted around the boat
  •  1 - number of us I can confirm was scared like a little school girl
  • 200+ - number of bait fish Rick caught with one throw of the cast net (Rick is the freakin' man)
  • 50+ - number of mosquito bites I counted at sunrise
  • 4 - number of times we threatened to spray shrimp scent behind Max's ears and hold him overboard by his ankles until he came up with a fish in his mouth (Max caught a lot of fish while we watched...early on)
  • 6 - number of hours we spent fishing before we went back to the alligator hangout for baitfish
  • 21 - number of alligators we counted in the water when we got there
  • One gozillion - number of baitfish schooling about what we now call "The Zoo" due to the numbers of fish, alligators, birds, etc...
  • 2 - minutes that passed before I caught the biggest speckled trout I'd ever seen
  • 26 - number of specs and sandtrout we caught for dinner
  • 6 - number of beautiful redfish we caught and released (too small, gotta be 20" )
  • 5 - number of boats that passed us and shook their heads ("What alligators?)"
  • 10 - number of hours of near continuous fishing that took place

Total Catch:

  • 8 - large speckled trout
  • 18 - sandtrout
  • 10 - Atlantic Croaker
  • 22 - large blue crab

0 - number of times I thought "man I really should be training right now". Sometimes unscheduled rest days are just what you need.

I have my endurance fishing day set for Thursday. We will be hitting the streams of Western Wisconsin all day chasing pretty browns, with a brief mid-day break to repair my deer stand, and no the running shoes are staying home! Should leave the river well after dark, and thanks for the reminder on the bug spray!

Good Luck,
Jay

Only 10 Hours. I've spent 10 hours getting to the fishin' hole.

Nice job on the specks and reds. Fishing is one thing I miss about FL, but I've found hunting is a nice replacement.

Thanks for the invite! But I think I'll stick to my Sierra streams, Bears, Mountain Lions and Snakes! I always bring a buddy that runs slower than me.

But as anyone on the Gulf coast will tell you, La. is the "Sportsman's Paradise".
Here's the pic to prove it.
Ok I had a pic there that was so sick even I had to take it down.

LOL… Love the part about the mosquitoes. Like they say, there is no negotiation with a insect that wants your blood..

I’m going to follow the lead here and say “where’s the pics?”

Cheers.

Rice.

PS. How big is a big Speck down that way. I did most of my speck in northern Ontario. This was my bigest.. Can't recall the weight.. It was from ice fishing.

We're working (Trout Unlimited) with the state DNR and the folks in Ontario to restore the specks in Superior. Just have to get rid of the Kamloops-Introduced and became more of a problem. So if you like 5 pound rainbows, come on down this fall, take them home, and help restore the native fish!

Good Luck,
Jay

Caught a few more specs today, all too small to keep. A nearby boat hauled in a monster redfish. He said 29", but it looked like Fishzilla to me. I did catch my first flounder today, but at 9" he had to go back home. Too bad. Me likey the flounder!!

It's Monday and I'm just getting back to the answer. I didn't see the river on Thursday. On Wednesday, my phone didn't stop ringing at the office, which after the last two years, is a great problem. I will be hard pressed to get out one or two more times before the season ends and instead of sitting in my deerstand Sat morning for the Archery deer opener, I was sitting in my office. Of course, I'm now in a much better position to justify that new QR bike I have my eye on, but I'll have to hire some more people so I can ride it. I did hear from my budy that I was to fish with, and he did go. The early morning was great, lots of action on hoppers he caught 10 real nice browns right away, then it got hot, too hot for trout, and he went and did some landowner relations for Trout Unlimited in the afternoon. BAsically going around to farmers and asking if they had any problems with the fisherman in the streams running through their property, and this will always get you a beer or two on the porch. So he had a great day as well.

Good Luck,
Jay
