Sunny
Total Time = 6h 03m 15s
Overall Rank = 161/234
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 30/42
Pre-race routine:

I got up at 3:30 to drive the hour or so to the race location. The hustle bustle of finding parking, transition, registration, etc. felt a bit hectic. Drank a gatorade and ate a power bar and bananna on the way. Felt very relaxed overall, unlike normal. Weather was unseasonably warm for that time of morning. Registration line too long and I did feel rushed a bit.
Event warmup:

Per hustle bustle described above, I had literally no warm-up. Just spoke to some transition neighbors about the course, etc. One guy suggested spraying PAM on calves to help get wetsuit off. Despite the reality of spraying PAM on myself in the dark at 5:30 in the morning...it worked quite well. :-)
Swim
  • 25m 29s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Nice clean, warm, calm water. Could not ask for better conditions. Foggy outside so my goggles seemed to fog a bit so visual was poor, but I love the Out-and-back format. Keeps the guessing to a minimum, IMHO. The course was SHORT or I'm superman :-)
What would you do differently?:

I NEED to learn to breathe every 3rd stroke. It was a godsend that bouys were on left since I breathe that way.

Swim FASTER!
Transition 1
  • 05m 17s
Comments:

Took my time...its my first HIM, for goodness sakes. :-)
What would you do differently?:

My transition area was messy due to darkness during setup. Bring a flashlight.
Bike
  • 3h 03m 35s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I tried to control myself with varying degrees of success. Always go too hard on the bike. But, it worked. Lost some time peeing at 30 miles, which did tell my I was hydrating properly, I guess. Forced a drink every 10 minutes and ate some goo every 1/2 hour or so, and felt real good throughout. No real crises moments, which I was worried about.
What would you do differently?:

Train longer to begin with...
Transition 2
  • 05m 39s
Comments:

Ran over timing mat and then realized I had forgotten race belt, so this would have been even longer. Also peed in this transition, so that took some time.
What would you do differently?:

Remember race belt :-)
Run
  • 2h 23m 16s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Cramped at about 7 miles and had to run/walk cycle to stay loose. a struggle to finish overall.
What would you do differently?:

More Gatorade once on the run. Biking I can get kind of blah feeling from gatorade, but I should have taken it immediately starting the run. I started to feel marginally better at mile 10 after drinking a nice cupful.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

cramps on run, limited time to train long on bike.

Event comments:

Good overall. Swim was ridiculously short. almost inexcusable. Transition was "open" and kind of a mess, but they did the best they could, I thought. Outside of swim shortness, it was a great course.
