For those of you on a 'plan' or coach -

How do you manage swimming? Do you still go to masters? Or do you pretty much just do your own thing on the prescribed swim days as the plan prescribes?

I know ideally the coach would work in the masters plan to fit your whole plan, but often times they don't, and for sure, generic plans don't do that.

depends, how much is your masters swim yrd vs what is the plan and distance.  most the time a masters swim workout is above the plan unless maybe you are doing an IM even than so i would continue with masters and just move workouts around.

be flexible with the plan.

I considered joining local masters group this spring, but scheduling just did not work for me when I'm trying to follow a training plan. I've improved some on my own with drills & videos of my stroke, but prob not nearly as fast as in a masters program.

But I'm poor swimmer (~2:15-20/100 for 1+mi swim) so really need to consider joining masters this winter.

For my clients, I work their swimming around what they have access to. One of my guys does a long swim alone, a group swim, and an open water swim for time each week. Another lady of mine does 2 pool swims a week, and I give her the workouts. Etc.

If I were working off a set plan, I would just fit in the swimming times as stated- Master's, on my own, with friends, etc.

If you can get to a Master's swim, that's probably your best choice. If you can get in the distance/time as laid out by the plan in the Master's swim.

I used a coach this season and last and she gave me specific things to do on my swim days.  However, I am sure if I said I wanted to do a master's swim on certain day(s) she would have made the substitute.  But I did rely on her to give me both the time/day of the swim but also the details for every single yard.

I used to do Masters, but it's just too expensive for me.

I'm on a BT plan that gives specific workouts. I generally do them as written, but I'll replace some days with open water swims.

If I still did Masters, I'd just do that instead. Though, I'd try to get a nice, long swim in every other week or so on my own.

If I did my own prescribed thing, I likely wouldn't swim. Masters for me is on the way to work, and $30 a month (can't beat that). The only thing I struggle with is waking up at 5am to get there in time. I have a coach, and he just works masters into the plan. On occasion he has me do other work that is not set by the masters group, but for the most part all I really need are some long yards with some fast folks.

For what its worth, my swim times have dropped a good :25 seconds per 100 since I started masters a year ago. YMMV

I use www.swimplan.com I'll modify their workout (add or subtract yardage) to match my plan.

Seems to be working.

HEY! Who's getting to swim three days a week? SO not fair! ;-D

Yep, I *wish* I had access to Masters, not to mention OWS more than three months a year (otherwise too cold), but you work with what you have, so I swim twice a week in a pool like Karen said.

I know that as a newbie swimmer, I'd benefit much more from a Masters class where I have someone keeping an eye on my form than swimming by myself. Like I said though, not an option here. :-(

Hey! I had you doing 3 days a week when you were HIM training! Ha! Don't worry, you will get to swim more with IM training.

I agree that Master's would be the first choice if it fit into you plan, but I think the main thing is just to swim as much as you can.

The plan I have used for the last 4 years is heavy into the swim training, and seems to really build my aerobic base with no impact.

Fortunately I have great access for places to swim. I do my swim training by myself following workout plans for the most part. The local fitness center has a pool that opens at 5:00 am Monday - Friday. Most weeks I can get 3 swims sesions in with no problem (other then getting my a$$ out of bed that early.) I can a call a day ahead and reserve a lane, but on most days I have the pool almost to myself that early in the morning.

I also have a friend that lives on a private lake that he owns that he lets me use use anytime for my OWS practices. When the weather is good, I try to get in one OWS a week when I am getting ready for the TRI season. I know it is a little risky, but I swim alone at 5:00 AM . I just stay close to shore. Nothing like catching the sunrise swimming in the lake.

I wish masters swims weren't always at 5:30 am and 50 miles away!
