Subject: Tempo run HR question...
I've read and been told that one of my run workouts each week should be a "tempo" run.  My understanding of tempo is something a little slower than race pace, medium to high intensity and only about 20 to 40 minutes in duration.  I've read that you should spend little or no time in Z3 unless you're training for an IM or 1/2IM, so I would assume this once a week tempo run would be mostly in Z4.  Is this correct or should Z4 only be used in fartleks and interval training for short durations?

Good question. Since a race in in the high Z4, the tempo should be in the low Z4 range.

From my understanding, Tempo should be low Z4, or at or slightly above Lactate Threshold.

Am I correct to say that once a week we do a nice tempo of 20-40 minutes at low Z4?

Gosh, that's why I love IM training from marathon training: the intensity of marathon runs gets to be too much for me!
