Subject: Anyone ever dealt with a bone bruise?

I wiped out on my bike last Saturday. Took a spill in some gravel and fell directly on my left side. My hip and upper thigh took most of the force of the fall. Everything is healing nicely but the area of most discomfort is right on the pointy part of my hip bone.

I'm thinking it's a bone bruise, but obviously I'm only guessing. I don't really feel like going to the doctor (don't really think it's anything serious) so please pass up the lecture. It feels a little better every day so I know it is healing. If at any point the pain does not improve then yes, I will go to the doctor but for now I don't believe it is necessary. Really I just want to blather on about it .

So, has anyone ever had a bone bruise? What did you do to treat it? How long did it last? I'm wondering how long I should wait before I try to run. I have been deep water jogging, swimming and cycling this week with no increased pain to the area but I really want to run outside!

I had a massage therapist tell me I had one and I asked a physical therapist about it. She kind of rolled her eyes.

I'm not exactly sure what that meant. Undecided

Were you seeing the massage therapist about the "bone bruise" or is that where you got it?

Doesn't really matter...as long as the story has a happy ending.

Ohhhh.

First person to make me laugh out loud (other than in sarcasm) today. You, my friend, get a happy cat with a bowl on its head:

If it is only a bruised bone (contusion) then treat it the same way that you treat any other bruise that you can see.  You look at it, poke at it, complain to it then move on to your next workout.

Bone bruises are majorly frickin' painful. That is, it would be painful enough for you to be thinking "It's broken and I really need to see a doctor."

If you're talking discomfort at this point, but you can still cycle on it, it's probably not a bone bruise. Especially in a major bone.

I'd keep doing what you're doing; try little runs, maybe at decreased intensity than normal; if it's just discomfort or achy and doesn't get worse, then keep doing the little runs and increase every few days until you're back to normal.

The first day after the fall I could not put my full weight on it but every day since it gets a little better.  Today it is just discomfort but I am taking a prescription anti inflammatory 2x daily (leftovers from some tendonitis I had over the summer).

I'll keep waiting. A few more days is not the end of the world. I was just getting back to running after the lay off fighting that tendonitis. Now I'll be starting over AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

This.
I had a bone bruise in my wrist once, and it was so painful there was no way to rationalize my way out of going to the doctor, because I really thought it was broken.

So. If you aren't at that point, and already healing, just keep doing what you're doing. Easy recovery, ice and ibuprofin. Do what feels good, don't push too hard, etc.
It is always a bummer having to start at what feels like the beginning, but before you know it you'll be feeling better.
