Pre-race routine:

Staying in a hotel always plays havoc with my routine. I don't have my pillow or the food I like. The fact that it was my first 70.3 had more to do with my not being able to sleep well though. I was a little nervious, although not as much as I was expecting. I trained hard for this and feel ready, now I just have to follow thru.
Event warmup:

Not much warm-up as usual. Up at 5AM, leave hotel by 6AM. Get transition ready then walk to swim start. I have a late start wave, so lots of waiting around. No chance to get in water before race due to in river start.
Swim
  • 29m 35s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

Nice current and wetsuit aided swim. Can't ask for much better. Could ask for less grass and other unknown stuff in the water. Kinda weirded me out to be swimming along and have a piece of something slimey wrap around my head.
Transition 1
  • 06m 37s
Comments:

Long run from the swim exit all the way around the back of transition. Only issue was I couldn't run well on the rough pavement.
What would you do differently?:

Toughen up my feet so that I'm not such a barefoot weenie.
Bike
  • 3h 04m 56s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.17 mile/hr
Comments:

Great bike for me. I have never gone so far, so fast before. I was on track to finish in less than 3 hours at the half-way point. Then I got nervious and decided to slow a bit as I felt that was maybe to fsat and I was using up my legs. I think that was a fairly good decision, as my legs did hold up for the run.

Also pleased with my nutrition. I have had issues with not being able to eat solid food while moving on the bike. I was able to get down toastchee crackers and stinger waffles in addition to my gels today though. Also drank plenty of water and gatorade for once. No dehyrdation for me today!
Transition 2
  • 06m 42s
Comments:

porta stop delayed me
Run
  • 2h 32m 13s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

It was hot, hot out there. I was melting down on the first lap. I was managing to keep a slow steady run pace, walking only the aid stations. I was just starting to consider than I may have to walk alot more on the second lap when some kind of mircle happened. Out of nowhere it clouded over and started a light rain. I practically jumped up and down and shouted Hallelujah. Temps dropped from 90 to mid-70's immediately. I would finish running this day!

I know looking at my time I was by no means fast. But I managed to keep a steady consistent run the whole race. And that's something I didn't know if I could do. I had never in training managed anything even close to that. I was happy with it.
What would you do differently?:

This is the only place I wish I had trained a little more. Next time I need to do longer training runs and I need to run more off the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Everything got very stiff, hard to stand up, hard to sit down. There's no way to win that game! But I had just finished my first 70.3 so I was ridulously happy no matter what my body felt like.

Event comments:

I loved this race. I enjoyed the entire day. I will do this distance again one day. And I'm already thinking of ways to get sub-6 next time. I know I can do it.
