That's about the time I would expect.  I did IMFL in 1:14 and change, and most of my halves are under 35 mins.  I am not worried too much about the IMLOU swim given what I went through with the mass start at Florida!  That swim will scare the crap out of you for the first 1000 meters.  Then is settles down.  A time trial start would seem pretty calm to me.

I almost went back to Florida in 2012 to really try to race that course, but then decided to try Louisville for a different experience.  I know it will be more difficult, but I have heard a lot of good things about this race.

Hi there,

So everyone from IMKY 2011 is saying that the biggest challenge is the hills on a ride! I have a question, how bad are they? Are they many, how tough are they? What is the longest and the hardest?

I did LOU this year. In my opinion the hardest hill section was the "out and back" or "finger" section as they call it. You only do it once, before you start the loop portion of the bike course. The grade at one point is 14%.

Hills are so relative. I live in (the flat part of) Kansas so have to drive ~1hr to find hills of any substance and they were still a challenge for me. The best advice I can give is to do a practice ride on the race course beforehand. The IAMTRI (www.iamtri.com) group puts on really great practice weekends with fully supported course swims and rides - I highly recommend it if you are concerned about the bike course at all.

EDIT: Found this online...  The second red box is the "out and back" finger.

I'm boarder line... Will see how the next few months of training go before I pull the trigger on registration.

I did IM LOU 2011 as my first ironman in my first year of triathlons and finished with 12:51. Train on hills if you can. It's not that the hills are killer but like someone said earlier, they do get annoying. But more importantly, If you can train on hills you are mentally prepared and your legs will be prepared for the run if you pace yourself properly. The heat is the other thing (which this year was a God-send with 80's) try and train at least a couple times a week in the heat so that you can get your nutrition/hydration plan nailed.

As far as a half. I did the Cardinal Harbor Half Ironman by headfirstperformance.com. The swim is a 2 loop in the ohio river. The bike is on most of the bike course so you will know what to expect for hills. You don't do the full Lagrange loop but part of it. It does include the out and back which is great. And the run is nothing but rolling hills which is great for the training bc the IM run course is completely flat. This race was on July 9th which gives you 1 week of recovery, 4 week build and 2 week taper into the IM race.

I encourage you to do this Half as a prep race for IM Lou bc Muncie is expensive and flat bike. If you can complete Cardinal Harbor Half strong you know your on the right track in being prepared for LOU IM 2012. Enjoy the journey. I am taking a year off of racing to focus on training and coming back to LOU in 2013 strong. Cheers.

You stated it was your 1st season of tris. Were you a runner biker or swimmer before? How long did you train fir race? I'm in similar boat. Thanks in advance

Hey everyone,

Just want to share a thing I have found lately. There is a 5 videos set on youtube about Louisville bike course. I find it pretty useful. A guy just driving around in the car and showing places, hills, etc. Just type "Ironman Louisville Bike Course" in search.

Have a great weekend everyone

I haven't pulled the trigger yet but definitely thinking I'll have my first go at a full IM in 2012! Louisville is looking good for me but still haven't decided 100% which event I want to do!

I have a little running/swimming background in the sense I swam 2 yrs in high school and would run 5-6 miles 3 times a week. Only biking background I had was cross country and endurance mountain bike races. I trained from Oct 15-Day of Ironman Lou. I took a month off due to knee injury(swam alot during that time as form of recovery). Stay consistent in training, have a purpose in your training and you will be fine. I did a sprint in April, the cardinal harbor half ironman in july and that was great for preparation. Enjoy the journey.

Just signed up as well. I'll be doing with with my best friend Bob. This will be our first Iron distance race.

Training in downtown Chicago will prove slightly challenging, especially once the snow starts blowing!

Hey all, I had a couple questions that I was hoping you could answer for me.

1. I know IMKY is not a wetsuit legal race due to the high water temps, but I thought wetsuits were allowed up to 84 degrees, you just wouldn't be eligible for awards or placing? Skin suits are eligible?

2. As this is my first IM distance, what kind of equipment would you suggest bringing with on the bike? I was planning on a profile drink on front, bottle on down tube, bento box with food and seatpost bag with a couple CO2s, two tires, and some changing tools. Anything else?

Welcome, take the 140 mile trip to Madison and practice on the Ironman Wisconsin bike course. They are pretty close in elevation.

I think doing a training ride up at Madison is an excellent idea. I know my buddy and I are definitely planning on heading down to Louisville next spring and doing a training ride and run down there as well.

The #1 recommendation I would make to anyone doing IM Louisville for the first time.

I'm in!

Ghost it'll be good to see you out there!

Bike: non-stop rolling hills from what I recall so it was hard for me to get into a rhythm back in 2008. I believe having a Power Meter for the bike is HUGE on this course. So many people cook the bike course and suffer so hard on the run. Seriously control your effort on the bike and stay hydrated otherwise you'll join the living dead that walk the run course.

Run: It's hot with pretty much no shade. Staying cool is key.

Swim: I plan on wearing a skinsuit for a bunch of various different reasons. Due to them being textile now I do not think they'll be as hot as the older suits that had neoprene in them.

Crap, I need to ride my bike a lot more haha

Yes!  Glad you will be there Shanks!  This is my 2nd, and really looking forward to this one.  Agree with the power meter and control comments.  I plan on adding 15-20% overall to my long rides as compared to my training to IMFL.

Yep, I'm in for Louisville 2012.  It will be my first IM and my 3rd season of tri's. I live in Louisville and I've been on the bike course a few times.  Figured since the race in August 26th and that happens to by my 39th birthday, I was destined to go for it. Look forward to seeing everyone out on the course training this spring, it will be fun.

Wow!!! Big race for the first one out.  It will be my first IM too but it's taken me 2 1/2 years of tri's to get the courage up to take on the challenge.

I'm on the fence about signing up. Would be my first IM.

Something is telling me I should do this, though. I've had at least 2 dreams in the past couple months about running over that bridge at the start of the run. i've never been to Louisville, but I've seen myself running over it!

Congrats on signing up.  It's a lot of fun.  This will be your first tri of any distance?  I would highly recommend doing some sprint and olympic distance tri's before then so you know what you are getting yourself into.

I agree. If nothing else, a couple of shorter distances will help with figuring out your transitions. Shorter distances will be good practice for the 'big day'.

I did IMLOU last year as my first fullIM. Had done 6 70.3s beofre LOU.
70.3 Fla (2)
70.3 Augusta(2)
Macon Half
70.3 Muncie
Got a great caoch this year and really focused on long course training.
Had a goal of sub 14hr, then moved it to sub 13hr...finished in 12:08:24...steller day.
All I can say is really hold back on the bike and save it for the run. I was able to sub-split the run on the second loop.
Now I have this tat on my right calf as a reward, You guys got this!!!

I also did this race last year and it was my first IM. I was deathly afraid of the slightest incline, so I spent a lot of time on my bike last year in preparation for this race, specifically on hills. I rode the course a couple months out from race date and was pleasantly surprised at the course. It's not so much hilly as it is relentless rolling hills. The only real climb to speak of is on the out and back section. The rest is all rolling. Having said that, my advice would be to prepare yourself and train on hills that are much harder than anything you'll face in Louisville.
