Subject: What does proper arch support feel like in a shoe?

I have a nagging occasional pain in my arch on my left foot while running. So far, I have not been able to narrow it down as to what causes it.

As a guess that maybe I need more arch support, I bought some green superfeet insoles to see if better arch support might help out. I never have used insoles before, just the ones that come in the shoes. I have had a shoe fitting which showed me to be an over pronator and have medium arches. I am also a heel to midfoot striker while running. I rotate between a pair of nike structure triax's and lunarglide 3's.

The first thing I noticed with the superfeet is that I feel actual pressure pushing up against my arch whereas with the stock insoles, I didn't feel anything on my arch. It is not uncomfortable, just now it is noticeable where before it was not.

I'm hoping someone can chime in and describe what proper arch support should feel like in a shoe so I can hopefully narrow down the cause of my foot pain issue.

Standing it feels like you have more support or contact than you need.

I must have tried every orthotic/insert you can buy and some customs. I am a huge Superfeet fan- the green ones.

I have a pair of $70 (!) New Balance insoles I'm testing now, and they have a mysterious "bump"in the forefoot.

In short- yup- they feel odd at first. Once you get up to speed the sensation seems to be more natural.

Totally not what you asked, but have you tried stretching your calf muscles?

A lot of foot problems come from tight calf muscles and stretching regularly (like 3 times a day) can eliminate many foot problems, including the arch.

That is really subjective. But, I can say that when I first started wearing orthotics, I felt the arch support. A lot. I had to get used to wearing my orthotics, because it almost felt like there was a small mountain inside my shoe. Now that I've been wearing them for a few years, I don't even notice it, and when I wear shoes without my orthotics, my arch feels kind of lonely and empty.

I haven't tried any extra stretching of my calves. I have recently started trying some stretches where you stand on a tennis ball and roll it around your arch. I can't say I've really noticed a difference but this pain only comes up maybe every 3rd run and not at any consistent pace/distance.

Before I just ignored it but now (last month) I'm trying to track it better and get to the cause and hopefully stop it from happening.

IMO...Go to a podiatrist. Could be anything.
