Subject: Insanity or P90x?

Hello All,

I am looking for a little advice for the off season. I am going to be tri training with my club appox 3x a week but I want to do something a little different during the off season this year. I would like to lose about 25lbs by my birthday (march 2012) and was just wondering which you would recommend, P90x or Insanity? A little background about me, 6'2, 236lbs competed in 4 triathlons, several 5ks and 10k and will be doing a half marathon next month. My goal in mainly weight loss (trying to shed the excess pounds) but just not sure which one would be best. I have heard great things about both but here they are both different. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I posted this an April thought it Might help you? I used P90X classic for an off season training program after Ironman FL Nov. 6, I wanted a break from all the long S.B.R. training eating power bars, gels and carbo drinks. My results have been more than I expected went down a pant size and it fixed a shoulder problem I had been fighting for several months, I picked up a half inch of arm size and when I showed up at the pool for the first time this year last week my swim buddys were wow you look like your in great shape. I had wondered how this break would affect my Tri racing and my daughter's college Tri team put on an early season sprint to help pay for their trip to nationals so I went to it  this weekend April 2 even though I had only done 2swims, 3bike rides & 5 runs this year. I was surprised with my race shape ended up 50th overall not sure how many ended up racing she said they had over 200 entered the week before and it was really cold 35deg even with a pool swim I'm sure they had some no shows. I was 3rd in the 50-54 age group.  I will say the P90X break I took has me fresh and excited to train for this season and I'm as strong and flexible as I have been in a long long time so... I would recommend P90X as an off season training plan. I am doing sort of a hybrid working in S.B. R. training a little more each week but I hate to give up the P90X  shape it's different then tri race shape and it’s been great.

Ill add to this that I feel like I had the best season of racing in 12-13 years this summer I stuck to short Oyl. and sprint races.

Done both, I second P90X. It will give you great strength for the season ahead, and leaves with few muscle imbalances.  Make sure you stick it out in the beginning... it is tough...

A little late to the conversation, but I'll add my two cents anyways having done both. P90x is a great work out. More weight driven, but nothing too crazy. My opinion Insanity is much more high intensity with little to no breaks so probably much better for weight loss. That being said, in my line of work I prefer crossfit. It's a killer workout and it usually takes less than a half hour. It's kind of a hybrid of both, very high intensity, but also ads in useful weight training. Just my opinion.

I'm waiting for my P90X to arrive in the mail. With my husband deployed I can't get out for biking and swimming as much as I'd like as I have small kids, so I wanted something intense I can do at home. I run at lunch time at the gym, so that's my cardio right there. Hoping the program will make me stronger & increase fitness. Once my husband returns I'd like to think that getting back to regular S/B/R training will feel better.
