Pre-race routine:

This was a pretty long drive for me. So I was up about 4 AM, hit the shower, got some food in me and took off in the car that was already packed up from the night before.

I got to the race site and it was very dark. Down at that end of the beach state park there are not lights. So I pulled into the dark parking lot, spoke to the D&Q guys and then took a walk down to the beach to watch the sunrise. The ocean was glass with 1-2 foot waves rolling in. Just a fantastic site.
Event warmup:

1 Mile run at 7 Min Mile pace to warm up and then I got the wetsuit on and headed down to the beach and got it. Ocean was not bad for October. Did about 300+ yards of swimming to get warmed up.

This was a bad one for me. We started on the beach and I really didn't get a good chance to check out the bottom where we started. They moved the swim start about 100 yards down the beach because the initial markers were to long. So when I hit the water I was just a mess. I hit a deep spot, then a shallow one and should have been running instead of trying to porpouse. In any event I got dropped by 2 guys and I could not catch them. One guy was a Princeton swimmer and layed on the gas the whole way. The gap was about 25 meters by the time I got to the beach. Not much I could do. I did swim well down the back stretch and did break away from everyone else. I just lost them on the dash into the water.

2nd fastest T1 as I knew I had to catch the two guys in front of me. First race report I've ever written where my wetsuit did not get stuck on my heels. I cut the suit about 4-6 inches the night before. Right up to the seam in the legs. I pulled that thing off and BAM it came right off.

Time to get to work. Two guys up the road and by the 1 mile mark I got the first guy. My Joule was not reading power only HR at that point I guess I didn't activate the 808 Hub properly. So I'm riding blind. I've had my fastest sprint races with no data in front of me. I guess that's a good thing.

Back to the race. I look up the road a bit and less than 50 yards is the race leader. I'm shocked to see that he's really not working hard from what I can tell. He looks like he's out for a Sunday curise. So I come up on him and just lay on it. I had no idea his intentions. For a moment I though that he was easing up as to let someone pass and then jump on me. So when I made the pass, I really layed on the gas for a while.

I got to the turn around and was please to see no one was even close. On the way back there was a touch of a head wind but nothing bad. With 2 miles to go I did the most work and tried to really do the damage on the guys behind me. Happy with the split and the time.

Transition 2

19th fastest here. My fault. I dumped my bike and it took a dump on me. I didn't want it to hit the ground so I had to drop my running shoes to catch the bike from falling over. Cost me a few seconds. Shoes on and I was gone.
What would you do differently?:

Rack my bike better.

Going into this run I was a bit concerned. All week my left foot and calf has been off. In fact it was off since Vegas 70.3 but that's a whole different story. So I wore CEP compression socks for this run in hopes that my leg would hold up.

Right out of the gate I really went to work. Took it right up to max. Got to the 1.5 turn around and had a chance to see where everyone was. I knew I had some talented runners in the field I just didn't know what kind of gap I had on them. I stayed on it for a while more and then with about qtr mile to go a few people kept yelling at me telling me no one was even close. I turned to look and they were right. So I backed it down a hair and brought it in to the finish.

Event comments:

Great small race at the end of the season. A beautiful day and some fantastic weather. No course traffic and a great ocean swim. What more can you ask for.
