Sunny
Total Time = 5h 48m 46s
Overall Rank = 154/252
Age Group = 30-34 Male
Age Group Rank = 1/9
Pre-race routine:

MY 1st HALF IRONMAN

Woke up at 4:45. . .fed horses and sheep and dogs. Had small protien shake, gu and gatorade. Drove 40 minutes to Smithville.
Event warmup:

Nothing. . . I figured I would get warm when I was doing the event.
Swim
  • 26m 34s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was good overall. ..caught a couple of waves from some boats that were near by. Had a hard time seeing the bouys with the sun right in my eyes. I seeded myself in the front on the left hand side since everyone was bunching up on the right.
What would you do differently?:

Wear my mirrored goggles

Had a good swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

I thought I would be slower in transition. . .surprised myself how I got in and out. .. but still could be faster, but didn't matter too much in the grand scheme of things.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 2h 45m 53s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on first lap, got tired on second lap. On my Cervelo the seatpost was actually moving down very slowly, so by the 2nd lap, I was not in a good position and my legs started to cramp.
Nutrition was Clif Shot every half hour and endurolytes on second lap. Gatorade Endurance to drink and water.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure seatpost stays up.
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Cramped up big time when I got off the bike, didn't see how I was going to run, let alone walk to my transition area.
Run
  • 2h 31m 19s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, this is where it went south. Maybe I didn't anticipate the heat. I walked every water station and walked some more. My run was a slow jog and just had to tell myself to keep going.
I am not a strong runner to begin with, so I knew this was going to be the tough part.

What would you do differently?:

Train harder for the run. .. especially the weeks leading up to the race. Run more in the heat in the afternoon and less in the cool mornings so I can get ready for race conditions.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around while my wife asked me if I was ok. Got some water and found shade. After I knew that I was not going to cramp up, went to the food tent and sat down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

RUNNING-I need to do one where I walk the whole way. I am happy with my first, but need to work a ton on the run and the bike.

Thanks! I would trade my swimming ability for some running ability. ..but hey, we all have stuff to work on and that is what makes it fun.

Thanks for reading.

Hell, I know what you mean.....  last weekend I was 2/80 in the swim,,,, 55/80 on the run, and I had no issues, that's just my regular pace
