Pre-race routine:

Drove to Albuquerque the day before. Had dinner at the Olive Garden with friends from one of the New Mexico State Police relay teams. Got my clothes ready, made up my sports drink and put it in my fuel belt bottles. Tried to sleep in a very uncomfortable Hotel bed.

Got up at 5am. At a bagel with peanut butter, 2 bananas, and an apple.
Event warmup:

Made several trips from the starting area to the car to pick-up/drop off items that my wife did/didn't need. Did some stretching an made a trip to the porta-john.

Downed a gel about 15minutes prior to race time.

  • 2h 29m 38s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

The course is described as flat and fast, but has a gradual climb to a turnaround. Course starts downtown and goes up and back on a riverside bike path. Water stations every mile.

Equipment used included Nike Kantaras, a four bottle fuel belt, and I fell to peer pressure and raced with my Ipod.

Mile 1: 9:14 (Run)
Ran with the pack, saw my split and knew I needed to slow it down.

Mile 2: 12:35 (Run/Walk)
Plan was to alternate walking and running each mile. I still was feeling the rush of the race and having a hard time slowing down to my "power walk." Switched back and forth between running and walking. Was feeling some stiffness in my shins. I stretched it out and keep going. Eventually I got it worked out.

Mile 3: 13:33 (Walk)
Holy Apple Jacked Batman... My Ipod froze up and I couldn't get it reset. (I'm not a big fan of Ipod.)

Mile 4: 09:03 (Run)

Mile 5: 13:37 (Walk)
A couple of memorable ego-boosting quotes this mile--

Conversation of the guys coming up behind me:
#1: "I think that guy has the right idea...walking."
#2: "I don't think I could walk that fast."

A little later up the trail a woman says:
"I could go that fast...for about 30 seconds."

Mile 6: 09:20
I'm still catching and passing the same people who are passing me during my walk segments.

Mile 7: 14:07 (Walking)
Hit the turn around, down a gel, eat an orange slice, cheer on my wife and her sister as I pass them on my way back down.

Mile 8: 09:37 (Run)
I'm really digging going downhill.

Mile 9: 14:13 (Walk)

Mile 10 - 11: 22:33 (Run/Walk)

Mile 12: 11:22 (Run/Walk)

Mile 13.1: 10:19 (Run)
It looked like I could still get in under 2:30:00, pick it up and kick it in.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch. Walked about 3/4 mile back, intercepted my wife, and ran in with her. Stretched some more.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The usual. Injuries, not enough time to train...

Event comments:

I set a new half mary PR. Several improvements over my previous 1/2 marathon 14 months earlier including: shoe selection, walk/run plan, use of body glide.
