Subject: Gift for an 8-yr old boy
Question for BT-ers who have kids or know kids well. I want to get my sister's godchildren (my god-niece and nephew) when I visit them next week. For the girl (10 y.o.), I have gotten her a set of 100 gel pens which I think she will like. I am having trouble finding the right gift for the boy though. Last resort is to get him the same set of pens. Do you think it's a good idea? You can find the item at the following URL.

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=11041771&whse=&top...

I mean, it's the same item for both of them, so they can't get upset. It's within budget and it's presentable. Do boys like color pens?

Ummm...I wouldn't think so...but I don't have kids. I would say some kind of sport item (for a sport he plays) or books. I think books are always a great gift for kids.

Books! No way. It's good for them. It's like getting fruit in your stocking instead of candy.

As the mother of 3 boys I can assure you can't go wrong with Hot Wheels Cars. And you can get those for less than a dollar each so for the same amount as the gel pens, then you could get him 20 cars! He will think that is very cool!

I thought about the Laser Tag thing too. But I can just imagine that he would beg me to play with him once he got it. And poor old me is not really thrilled about playing Laser Tag. Guess the strategy of last resort is don't get them anything and take them out for a dinner or something. Although I still think the pens are kick-a** gift for the girl. Urgh.

A lego set of star wars or harry potter etc.  Get a smaller set if you don't have much space in your lugguage.

LaserTag is on the top of my 9-year-olds' christmas list. Also, they're always up for video games, try as we might to dissuade them.

Remember the Laser Tag commercial from the 80's that has a disclaimer that said "stadium not included"? Funny how older toys are making a come back.

My 8-year-old (and 7-year-old) are into Bionicles, k'nex, magnetix (or really, anything you can build with). My sons, however, would also be thrilled with crafty things like markers, etc. My boys would not, however, play long with something like laser tag (they're just not into that stuff), so I really think it depends on the kid.

Legos are cool. There are tons of themed sets if he's into race cars, Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc. Plain old general building block sets never go out of style.

my 4 1/2 year old loves 'inventing' and has been building stuff with my husband in his shop. she would probably love bionicles, k'nex, or magnetix. any recommendations for a starter set and/or something for her age.

i have little girls who like drawing unicorns and hello kitty, so i really have no idea what an 8 year old boy would want. i'd go to amazon and click on toys and go to the age catagories

Do boys like color pens?

Oh sure. Many of them even go into lucrative careers as florists and interior designers...

Try books, Legos, a cheap remote controlled car.

My nine, soon to be ten, boy is all over your chart.

He is crafty, likes to build clay models and draw with markers.

He also likes to play certain online games.

He likes to watch DVDs

Bionicles and Legos are cool with him too.  He has several bionicles and likes to mix them up and build weird ones.

He's gonna like downloading music with his new MP3 player he's getting for his bday in a few weeks (cheepie walmart one).

He likes cool clothes.

Ah, they run the spectrum.  Do some stealth investigating and find out what they like.  Ask your sister!

We bought my niece a tshirt, she is coming here this weekend with my parents, and a big carnival is happening, so we bought her a shirt with that event on it.  Plus we're taking her to Build a Bear for her bday gift, she's never been and has no idea what it is.  She's seven.

I have 2 girls, but my brother has 3 boys(9, 5, 3).  Roll a ball out between the 3 of them(or 5 of them if you count myself and my brother) and they/we are entertained for hours.  However, I my step mother's grandson's are very into science type things.  So it just depends on his personality/interests.

definitely do some investigative work... he might be into sports, art, bionicles, or even yugi-oh... if he was into sports... a ball of some sort would be good.... i have found that a lot of boys that age are really into yugi-oh (i was a soccer coach for that age group when i lived in the states)

My 8 year old also loves to build with legos, magnitix, and K'Nex. My son got a lego set for his birthday tht he can build 17 (maybe more) different vehicles out of and he is in hog heaven!Another fun thing is walkie talkies which you can find anywhere, in any price range.

Hope that helps.

Thank you everyone for your response. Looks like my godnephew is just like any regular 8-yr old boy. He also like video games and lego etc. I got him a set of Laser Tag. If he asks me to play with him, I will say the headset is for kids and it doesn't fit my oversized adult melon. Muhahah.. Hope it fits in my suitcase. I am seriously running out of room.

I know that I would have been overjoyed to get a set of coloured pens or pencils at that age because I was always drawing.  That was in the 50's though and we did not have computers or video games then.  Get him the coloured pens if he has shown any signs of creativity and a strong desire to draw.  If not, find out what video game he would like and get him that.  Whatever you do, DO NOT buy him clothes!

I agree. Somehow kids don't regard clothes as gifts like adults would. He would be really upset if I get his sister color pens and him a sweatshirt.
