Subject: Training for 1st Tri
Hi All, I'm John from Jackson,Ms.
I found this site as I have been researching all I can on Triathlons.
I'm 39 years old, And just started training for an upcomming Tri June 2005. I have been a weight lifter for 6 years, and do extensive cardio. My family and I ride bikes often,So I decided why not really do some training and see if I've got what it takes to "finish" a triathlon...LOL
So I have been riding the ole' mountain bike 15-20 miles a day,and have got my running up to about 5 miles. Of course I have encountered so many strange things while training in our community.... I have had many dogs chase me, prompting me to purchase pepper spray, I have yet had the heart to use it..lol
I have had one dog actually bite me,and another dog actually run into my back wheel, He was running so hard he couldnt stop and "wham!.... I don't think he was hurt, And my bike seemed fine also.
I have entered my 1st real run for this Saturday. It's a 5 K. I will just be extatic if I can finish it before everyone goes home...LMAO'
I have ordered a new road bike for training on,and of course it's too cold to swim outdoors, So I will be training at a local health club for that soon.
Is it normal to be frightened for a first run? I know a 5K isn't much, but it is a start.

I just wanted to introduce myself, and not remain a lurker...lol
And see if anyone may have any advice for a beginner with a big dream :-)

Thanks, And looking forward to meeting all of you.

John

Welcome John,

I am 49 and have done a few tris and am getting ready for my first HIM

What race or distance are you planning on doing?

My first race in 1993 a 5 miler if I remember correctly, I remember how nervious I was!!! My first mile I went out way too fast and ended up walking quite a bit after that... Hope that helps you on race day.

I have had a number of dog attacks mostly running but a couple on my bike. If your going up hill on the bike that is the worst, getting off the bike and keeping the bike between you and the dog and use the bike as a defensive weapon. I was taught to drill using only one foot clipped in and that has helped me on another instance, I unclipped on the side the dog was on to kick at the dog and continued to peddal with the other foot. When running I always run with a 32oz water bottle that has a velco strap and is easy to hold onto the 2 #s of water, I was attacked by two large dogs and it saved me from geting bitten by using it to punch at one of the dogs while kicking at the other... the water bottle has some holes in it now but I don't. Another thing you can do is to throw something at the dogs rocks or if you don't have anything to throw at them pretend you are throwing somethign, that will work as well.

That same water bottle has also save some sever trail rash when I have fallen on trails in the Desert.

If your city has a leash law ordinace law report the incidents...

Good Luck!!!!!

Welcome aboard and good luck in the run. Be careful with the tri's, they become addictive.

Welcome!

How'd the 5K go? I would have given the same advice about not going out too fast on the first mile. And, even during races, don't forget to enjoy the run.

Looking face-to-face with a dog, pointing (to their home), and sreaming "GO HOME" has always worked for me. There's probably better advice, though. I expect I've been lucky.

Don't let early struggles with swimming discourage you. Just hang in there...ask "experts" about specifics, and keep at it.

Good luck!

Welcome ... glad to have another from my adopted homestate of Mississippi on board. As football is not much of a distraction for any of us this year, enjoy the tri obsession.

Based upon your bike and run miles, it sounds like you are off to a great start. Check out the training log feature here ... it is free and a good record of what you have done, how much and when. This is invaluable information you will wish you had down the road.

As I recall from reading some of the race reports (but am unsure of the distances), on top of the smattering of events around the state Memphis in May has a pretty good tri and that there are some in Louisiana and the FL Panhandle (provided that you survive 'Bloody 98' to get there).
