I'm 37, have always wanted to do a triathlon, but kids, work everything, any excuse I could think of. Been a smoker since i was 20. A friend passed away last week, heart attack, he was 41. That was a real eye opener. Looked at my two kids and wife (who by the way will be running in her first Marathon in Jan) and made up my mind to just do it. No more excuses. I realized I need to get myself back in shape, but needed a goal, so my goal is to complete my first triathlon (probably sprint tri) before my birthday in June. So I quit smoking (I know this will be the toughest part, but my wife doesn't think I can do it, so that's more motivation). I ride my bike a little during the summer, play softball, go to the gym over lunch 3 or 4 times a week (mostly weights). I'm excited to do this, a little nervous, but very excited.

Congrats on making the leap to a healthier lifestyle and an awesome sport. You have found a great site with lots of support and advise. Sounds like you have made the decision for all the right reasons and you have a built in support system. Congrats again and best of luck.
BTW, ya' ain't old enough to call yourself "old guy" yet

Thanks for the encouragement. Like I said the toughest part is going to be the quit smoking part. I just open this website whenever I think about wanting one. Keeps my focus elsewhere. thanks again!

You call 37 old? I am 51 and there are plenty older guys out there. Find yourself a tri club and people to train with. Enjoy it. It is a great way to stay healthy.

I did not get into this until I was 38. You will find tons of people our age out there giving it a shot. Good luck and congratulations on living a healthier life!

I didn't realize there were many others around my age or older starting triathlons. That's very encouraging to hear.

Fresh off Body Marking for the MaimiMan ... trust me 'old dude' you are A) not alone in your current age group and B) judging by the numbers on people's calves, you have a nice long tri-career ahead of you.  (And BTW - I started racing/did my first tri at 42 so lay off the 'old' stuff, sonny! ;-)!!!)

If I would have known there were that many people around my age that are starting triathlons or started around my age, I would have used a different subject line. But I will say the more I hear about it, the better I feel and more encouraged I get. Thanks for all the support and sorry about the "old" part. Should have just put new to triathlon, but now I feel way better about starting that I did before today.

I was 41 years young, and 50 pounds overweight when I started training for my first tri a year ago. Now I am 40 pounds lighter, addicted to this lifestyle, and can't imagine ever going back to the way I was. I hope you get to that point too!

I started out with the conservative couch to 5k running program on this site, and it helped me to build up my running without injuring myself, despite my weight. Then I used the sprint training programs on this site. This site rocks!

So, one more comment on old guy. I just turned 45, did some 5k's to half marathon in my 20-30's, kept pretty active through most of my life, (though slowed down during busy years of schooling etc). Half year ago started running pretty regularly, Here's some encouragement for anyone-my two mile runs in April were 16 minutes, (per mile-not for the entire two). Did my first tri a few weeks ago, reverse 5k run, 10 mile bike, ending with 350 meter swim. I'm still slow but my mile pace dropped from 16 min/mile to 9:45 per mile for the 5k. Never too old to start. It is a great healthy habit, good luck to you!! Just be prepared to change your addiction from one thing to another---smoking to tri's!--I think the triathalons are healthier!!!

Welcome to the site...in reality it seems that those in their 30's are really in top form.  A lot of races I see the results for have the winner as someone in that age range.  Good luck with your training and congrats on the lifestyle change decision.

I am new to this training also, but I wanted to send my encouragement on quitting smoking. I quit about 7 years ago from a two pack a day habit. To this day that is still the hardest thing I have ever done, but also the most rewarding. Good luck!!!

So far, so good on the quitting, but I'm fine one moment and the next I feel like chewing down the walls to my cube. I do actually feel better already, except for the mental part.

I quit about 10 years ago but my method was pretty unorthodox. I substituted my craving for smokes by eating tons of chocolate for 1 week. It seemed to quench the desire. After one week the physical need to smoke was gone. It was then all about the mental desire. You know, smoking after you eat, during social drinking, when bored... even leaving the house without a pack and a lighter in my pocket took some getting use to. It was tough... but I'll never go back to smoking... no way.
