Since originally posting this, my fate has been sealed.  I have been sick since the day before Thanksgiving and haven't run a lick.  Looks like I will just be looking to finish the dern thing.  I almost don't even want to run it now.

As the saying goes, discretion is the better part of valor. How about trying Austin in February?

I will still run White Rock 12/11.  I already paid my money.  Might as well get my money's worth of pain for it.  I will just be going in with no other goal than to finish.  If that means 5 hours, fine.  If it means 4:15, great.  I know I have a good base from my tri season, it will just be a matter of how my legs and brain handle the repitition of running for that long.  I'll let you know how it turns out.

No, I meant Austin as a time-goal race, after White Rock.

It can be done by some of the better runners.........heck they can even go sub-3:30 but you are talking about people who have ran most of their lives.

My guess is this is going to hurt but you do not want to be walking in the last ten miles of a marathon or that could become a long day. Even if you feel good go slower it will all end soon enough. Once you start to walk........it's over and the pain does not get any better!!

The last ten miles of a marathon are a lot different than the run of a HIM.

I agree with Bear's fuzzy math. 20 miles is about half way.

Don't really follow your math there, but I was simply replying to Comet's question as to how I felt when I held a 8:53 pace which was during my longest run of 16 miles. I was not implying that because I held a 8:53 pace for 16 miles then I can surely hold a 9:15 pace over the remaining 10.2 miles.

Not math just opinion. As far as effort goes, 16 miles is about one-third as difficult as running a marathon. Holding X pace for sixteen miles takes about one-third of the training that holdng an equivalent pace over the length of a marathon would take. Yada yada, void where prohibited, actual mileage may vary.

Gee, Jim, that makes me feel so much better, having you agree with me. Undecided

Ladies and gentlemen.  The results are in.

Yes, a 4 hour marathon is possible with a longest training run of 16 miles more than a month before the race.  However, it is not possible to be done by me.  But I feel confident a better athlete in good condition could pull it off.  But my 35 year old body would have had a tough time.  My time you ask?

4:20:30

Thanks for all the words of advice.  I just went out and tried to run comfortably.  Didn't keep track of my pace at all.  Just tried to stay comfortable and I was able to finish fairly comfortable.

Way to run smart, glad to see the race didn't start until 21 for you-lucky.

Great job, smart running. That 4-hour marathon is closer than you think.

I don't know about that.  My knees are really hating me today.  I was taking ibuprofen before I even got out of bed this morning.  But I enjoyed it 4 hours or not.
