The most commonly used one is the Harris-Benedict formula, but there are several others including things like the Bodygem that attempt to measure it. Each has it's flaws. (For example, the Harris-Benedict method doesn't take into account body fat percentage, and since muscle burns more calories than fat it can be off for someone who is muscular.) Since part of calories burned is just keeping your heart beating, it seems useful to have a default calculation but allow a user to override that base number. The calories per activity stay relatively the same and are generally based on weight. |
