Subject: Logging of Calories Burned...

Hi -

I know it shows up on the todo list from 2004 but was wondering when we were likely to see any kind of feature to log calories burned so that we can compare them to calories consumed.  It would be helpful if there was a way to enter BMR/RMR from a BodyGem test as well as calculate it, then be able to do all the basic exercises.  Right now I'm doing it by hand but who knows how accurate that is.....

Thanks!  You are doing a fantastic job!

I'm not sure of the status of the "Calories consumed" feature, I'll check with Ron. As to the BodyGem test and calculation, I've never heard of it. Can you give some more details?

Bodygem is a test of resting metabolic rate inferred from your rate of oxygen intake vs co2 output.  Here's the company/site http://www.healthetech.com/bodygem/

I mentioned that only because there are like 12 different ways to calculate your RMR/BMR and the numbers can be very different.  The most commonly used one is the Harris-Benedict formula, but there are several others including things like the Bodygem that attempt to measure it.  Each has it's flaws.  (For example, the Harris-Benedict method doesn't take into account body fat percentage, and since muscle burns more calories than fat it can be off for someone who is muscular.

Since part of calories burned is just keeping your heart beating, it seems useful to have a default calculation but allow a user to override that base number.  The calories per activity stay relatively the same and are generally based on weight.

This IS still planned for '06 AND would include RMR/BMR calculations.  (I should update the list)  I havent got into the specifics yet, but I'm sure you already addressed some issues that I would have run into.  Perhaps we would offer several different calculators for RMR/BMR and you choose which is best for you.

Asssigning a caloric burn number to all the sports here will be a big task as it will also depend on body-weight from my investigations so far.   I have found an excellant article forwared by another member that I hope to get my hands on soon that assigns caloric expenditure values to various sports depending on weight and intesity.   I'm hoping that the equations are simple.  We would have to factor in intensity too somehow based on a scale or HR stuff.  I have talked with a few nutritionists on this to get a rough idea of project cost if I were to do it right...it would be our biggest endeavor yet.  But I think it's the last main item the log needs.

Ron-

You might want to check out FitDay.com.  I log my training there (just the type and amount of time) and they ESTIMATE my energy consumption.  The list of activities is fairly extensive and includes multiple sub-categories for things like running @ 6mph, 6.5mph, 7mph and so on.  It would be totally cool if BT could somehow tap into our personal FitDay logs and extract some of the basics to display in our blog pages here.  For instance, I would provide my FitDay username in the settings page here at BT and that would allow BT to "talk" to FitDay and pull things like my macro nutrient and caloric consumption for the day as well as show my energy budget for the day.  I'd still go to FitDay to log my specific food intake.  It might be easier to pull the data from there then trying to recreate those features on BT.

Many of the newer HRM also calculate a estamated caloric burn based on weight HR activity and time...

I emailed fitday long ago-never heard back.  I am actually pretty sure I know where they get their info from as I foind it on another site.  I have found it is always best to create these features 'in house'...it's just getting the most accurate numbers-programming isn't that hard.

Too bad FitDay is non-responsive.  I like using their site but I'd be happy to dump them if I can have the same functionality here on BT.  It just seems like the extensive databases of foods and exercises would be difficult (or at least time consuming) to duplicate.
