I just started training for my first HIM, in my 3rd week, and I cannot believe how sore, hungry, and thirsty I am all the time. I drink at least 1 gallon of water a day and cannot get enough to eat. Is this normal?

When I was training for my first HIM last summer, I started dropping weight like crazy (and I did not have that much to lose). I now eat five times a day and try to pack in the healthy calories. I still have to weigh myself twice a week because sometimes my food intake slips and I drop too much weight again.

Try eating more often and things with higher calories. Nutrition can be extremely complicated but I just go by trial and error. I take a bunch of snacks to work (cheese sticks, cliff bars, apples, oranges, nuts, yogurt, bananas, grapes) and make sure I snack quite a bit. If I am still hungry, I will bring different snacks (or just more).

If you are drinking a ton of water and are still thirsty, try a sports drink to replace some of your water.

If you need more detailed guidance, there are many people with a real grasp on nutrition (unlike my wing-it apporach) and if you post on the main board, you will probably get a few more responses.

Thanks, I am actually trying to lose weight so I cut out the sports drinks unless I am doing a long run or bike. I will add them back and see if that helps quench my thirst.

I'm training for my first, and it is slightly more time a week than my marathon training was last year. I get tired by the weekend when my long workouts are, but with my rest day on Mondays I rejuvinate pretty well.

I eat like crap in some ways ....... and not in others. So I'm maintaining pretty much the same weight. I expect when it warms up and my long days on the weekend turn REALLY long that I'll start to lose some. But that's fine, because I have a race weight I would like to be at (which I haven't been at since I stopped cycling road racing back in '98).

I'd love to be back in the low 170's by June ...........

How much sodium do you get from your diet? Depending on the amount of training you are doing and your sweat volume, you may need to get more electrolytes. Before moving back to sports drinks which can pack a calorie punch, consider tracking your sodium/potassium ingestion. If either are low, you might consider Endurolytes from Hammer Nutrition. Usually these are used in hot weather/long training conditions. However, supplementation may help. But be careful...read the label!!!

I suffer from the same issues. I stay away from Mainstream sports drinks as they are simply pretty-colored sugar water w/ some electrolytes.

Good Luck!

Eating several times a day is good, but you should be trying to eat right after a workout, especially harder ones.  The hour after a workout is supposed to be the best time for your body to absorb nutrients.  A combination of carbs and protein is typically recommended and should help your recovery.

I think the difference in my body reflects the difference in training for a HIM. Training for a sprint or a Oly does not require an intelligent level of nutrition, but now I had better start eating properly or my body will shut down.

I think I am going to start using the post recovery powder from Hammer Gel, and see how it works.

Jr...

Post your results from Recoverite! I haven't tried it yet since it came out, but I've been thinking about switching to it.

Thanks!
