I never saw the 1st episode of Lost.  Was last night a repeat of the first episode or a flashback with new information from the first episode?  I thought it was a repeat so only watched it sporadically.  Any new info?

The creators have said that we will find out what caused the plane crash this season. Just speculation, but I bet it's not a coincidence they just showed the plane crash episode. I bet we find out soon. Of course, I am often wrong...

I don't think that is the episode that was scheduled to air last night. Last week's previews were about Claire remembering the whole kidnapping thing... anyway, all week my DVR was set to record an hour long new episode. Then, as soon as 9pm rolls around, it's not recording, Lost is on for 2 hours, and it was old. Oh well. I needed to go to bed early anyway.

Any new info?

I never saw the first episode in it's entirety, so it was good viewing for me. Here's the most significant scene, in my mind:

John Locke describing the game of backgammon to Walt. Two opposing forces, light and dark.

Not sure what the connection is between these points, but I'm sure there is one. Nothing happens by chance (no pun intended) on Lost.

  • One of the most enigmatic characters is John Locke (who describes backgammon).
  • The Roman name for backgammon is "Tabula."
  • The 3rd episode is called Tabula Rasa.
  • John Locke, the philosopher, wrote about "Tabula Rasa" [the theory that the (human) mind is at birth a "blank slate" without rules for processing data, and that data is added and rules for processing are formed solely by one's sensory experiences. Wikipedia]
  • Backgammon is described as: a game of luck and skill. It is played by two people with 15 checkers each on a board consisting of 24 spaces or points. The checkers are moved according to rolls of the dice. Each player tries to bring his own checkers home and bear them off before his opponent does, hitting and blocking the enemy checkers along the way.

Perhaps "Lost" is a life-sized backgammon game.  Who is light and who is dark?
