So I haven't worked out in two weeks, I'm getting over bronchitis. I'm feeling much better, and thought I'd try to work out today. Still have a cough though. In two weeks, how much fitness can I expect to lose? Can I go out and try to run 3 miles? I know I should probably play it by ear based on how I feel, but I'm not good at pushing myself, so I want to make sure I'm not wimping out, and using the illness as an excuse

What's everyone's experience been with coming back from a pretty hard illness? Thanks.

Take it easy coming back and make sure you don't push yourself beyond the comfort zone for the first couple of workouts. It's easy to want to get back into the workouts at the same intensity that you stopped at, but your body won't be ready for that.

In general, you can expect that it will take 2x as long to regain conditioning as it did to lose it. In other words, it may take a full month to get back to where you were. Everyone is different though, of course.

I'm more or less in the same boat as you. I had some wicked bug that totally wiped me out. It was a strong energy leech. The syptoms have mostly subsided and now I feel that any further days that remain as "non-training" are inexcusable. I'm getting back out there today even if it kills me! I plan to log a 3 mile run this evening. We'll see how it goes.

I think each of us should go for a run/walk session of 20-30 mins or maybe a mild bike of the same duration. Don't put any time/pace expectations on yourself. Just go for the feeling of being out there and getting all of your systems working again. Take it easy. If you get totally wiped early into your session go ahead and slow down to a walk or casual pace on the bike. If you need to... stop and take a break. I'm going to wear my HRM and if it gets all crazy then I'll know I'm back to early or pushing to hard.

The generic rule is that for every two weeks of inactivity you lose about 50% of your fitness. Friel's Tri. Bible actually breaks it down to the specific areas of fitness and gives the numbers for each portion lost. Needless to say, it ain't pretty!

You should be okay to go out and do an easy run if you are feeling up to it I would think. But I'm no doctor .........

I had bronchitis early in the year and it wiped me out! When I finally felt good enough to run I could barely squeak out 2.5 miles. I think it was a bout 4-6 weeks before I was back to "normal." Take it easy and listen to your body.
