Being one of the only non-catholics in my office, I was very tempted to bring a nice, big, juciy steak in for lunch and savor (very loudly) every bite.

Even if I was catholic, I really don't have much to give up.  I already gave up 'coke', processed sugar, and a barely watch TV as it is.  Food wise, I can't really give up anything that wouldn't hurt my training.  I guess the only thing I could give up would be BT, and even I have my limits. 

How bout in support of catholics, you give up making fun of catholics.  If a big juicy steak is what you want then bring it to work, i'm sure you will not hurt anyones feelings.

Today I was not snippy to everyone who asked "what is that on your head" or "hey, you got a lit somethin...." and so on. ...... 

Every year I walk with my head down and try to avoid people.  Today I walked with my head up and smiling.  

speedy service- 30 min at the hospital chapel!  hubby got the crowded evening service which he came home 2 hours later........

I used to be a Catholic.  Don't know what I am now ... a triathlete, I guess.  Okay I'll give up eating solid foods all day Thursday of this week.  I will simply drink coffee and water all day.

Since it is Ash Wednesday and traditionally for lent all catholics give something up, I was just wondering what everybody else would be giving up.  I don't have any real bad food addictions (soda, coffee, chocolate).  So I have decided I need to be nicer to my intern.  Even thought she is pretty mean to me.  Plus I'll see what else comes up.


Wow I’m in the right field. Accounting interns get 100 lunches and golf trips (recruiting isn’t it great!) then when they get hired on they get treated like dirt, no lunches no golf, and the electronic leash.

It was a pleasure to run into people today who also had ashes on their foreheads.

I'm watching the Ash Wednesday service with Pope Benedict as I write this.  It's interesting, B16 received and is imposing the ashes by sprinking them on top of the head instead of on the forehead.  I'd never seen this before.

Twelve years ago for Lent I gave up drinking alcohol. I made it through Lent and haven't touched the stuff since. This from someone who enjoyed more than a few beers three night per week.

Now, can someone help me find the 90 pounds I lost?

Its actually a Christian (which would include Catholicism) practice and not strictly Catholic.... Im still debating what to give up. I could care less about food... hmmmm ill have to post later on what im gonna give up. My brain is too tired at the moment :P haha

Good for you....I posted this on Why Mardi Gras everyone should remember the purpose of the Lenten Season...And yes I'm Catholic

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent for Western Christian churches. It's a day of penitence to clean the soul before the Lent fast.

Roman Catholic, Anglican, and some other churches hold special services at which worshippers are marked with ashes as a symbol of death, and sorrow for sin.

Symbolism of the ashes
The marking of their forehead with a cross made of ashes reminds each churchgoer that:

Death comes to everyone
They should be sad for their sins
They must change themselves for the better
God made the first human being by breathing life into dust, and without God, human beings are nothing more than dust and ashes

I like the change for the better since everyone on this site is tri-ing to do that in one way or another.
