betyoursilver - 2006-03-03 1:34 PM ...you still have a "party line" for your telephone service.

That's a great one. Can you even imagine what percentage of the population has no idea what this is, and once explained would think that it's completely ridiculous?

Well, I'm part of that large percentage... SO, what is it???

1 phone line, 2 or more customers share the same line. Each of you has a slightly different ring-tone. And of course, eavesdropping is as easy as picking up the receiver.

Heh, I should remember this information about dealing with livestock.

You know the marathon is in the middle rural Ireland when the race issues press photos like this:

You know when you live in a small town when . . .

  • . . your co-workers are aware of, and actively discussing, some minor change you made to the exterior of your house or landscaping, before you've actually had a chance to tell them about it.

  • alternately, you know you live in a small town when . . .

. . . you can look out your kitchen window while drinking your first cup of coffee of the day and make eye contact with your boss while he heads out on his morning run.

All your rides are on tar chip roads and if you crash they won't find you until harvest time.

Hey, I'm kinda scared to take my new bike out on the tar chip road, so I've been sticking to the well-maintained but very busy main state highway road for my first couple of rides.

Do you take any specific precautions before taking your bike onto tar chip, or "seal-and-scatter" roads? Special tires? Special liner inserts? Cross your fingers?

Hey, I'm having deja vu. Did we have this thread before, or did I hit my head on something?

(errr, that should be deja vu, not vous. I guess deja vous might be the feeling that you've been yourself before.)

Miraculously, there is a bike lane.

It has signs that say "no ATV's"

I have no problem riding on chip and seal roads... just don't use your race tires. I use a heavier touring tire.

That's what I should have done when I rode the Tour of the Unknown Valley century. Significant parts of the century weren't even paved - I guess that's when you know your riding in a rural area! Fortunately, i didn't get a flat tire. Although it was my first century, I knew there was something strange about this ride when early on the hard core types were blasting past me on mountain bikes with slicks.

I actually use a wax on my frame to avoid nicks in the frame.  I use my regular tires, but I would never get to use them otherwise.

When you have to yeild for a MOOSE! I swear this happened to me last fall, north of Bozeman-the driver of a car coming up behind actually stopped right next to me when she too saw the moose coming out of the trees next to the road, then pulled her car between me and the moose because she feared for me! The moose just crossed quietly, disappeared on the other side. Made me pedal FAST home, wondering if I could outrun a moose on my road bike...

Heh. Or when you get home from work only to find that your boss and his wife and two small kids and two other random neighbors/coworkers have beaten you to it and are loading up the logs from your hurricane-felled tree to get it out of your yard.
