Expert  950    McKinney, TX |  Subject: I am so proud of my Daddy...I just wanted to post a thread about my dad. He handed in his 2 weeks' notice today and on March 22, his 56th birthday, he will be a retired man. How cool is that??? He graduated from HS in 1968 and put himself through college by working offshore on oil rigs during the summers. He graduated college in 1972 with a BS in accounting, but at the time, the oil industry in Louisiana was booming, so he stayed on with his company and continued working offshore, working his way up the non-corporate ladder for the last 32 years, working for only 2 companies all this time. What makes my dad's job unique is that he worked 7 days on and 7 days off. He was gone literally half my life. I certainly don't love him any less for it. I love him all the more. I mean, who can make that kind of sacrifice? I guess I've taken it for granted all this time because "Daddy has to work." I know what some of you are thinking...retired at 56, he must be loaded. No. Not at all. He has just saved and saved and planned and planned for this day for many years and has budgeted his money to the penny to ensure he and my mom will be comfortable, happy and still have some money to travel and play golf whenever they want. I just wanted to ramble on a little about how great I think my dad is and I hope you all can reap the fruits of your labor one day like he is. My mom retires in two years, at age 50, and not because she is rich by any means, but b/c she'll have her 30 years service in with a very large and old company, so she gets her pension, lifetime benefits, etc. Neither of my parents went to college, but worked hard their entire lives to give me and my little bro everything possible. For two summers while in college, I did what my mom did for a living and I HATED it. Soooo monotonous. It always amazes me that she was able to do that job day in and day out for 30 years just to support her family. Didn't mean to hijack. Again, congrats to your dad. And those are some cute grandkids of his! |

Happy Retirement and Happy Birthday, Dad of T_i_c_s! He definitely one of the unique kinds of jobs where they are gone LITERALLY half of their kids' lives.......like deployed military or airline pilots. Hopefully you've learned how to save and invest like he did as well and that you can retire at that age too! I can definitely understand your admiration for your dad's efforts. I have so much admiration and respect for my dad as well for many different reasons as he busted his a$$ for us. Why is that kid standing in the corner? |

There's no secret but regular savings, living below your means, and starting to save early. The difference between putting away a few bucks starting at 20 vs. starting at 30 is unbelieveable! |

My dad waited until he was 62 to retire, not because he had to but because he loved his job and the perks he got with his job. When the company changed (a large corporation that starts with a W and ends with a mart made the company my dad worked for change) and he no longer received the perks he enjoyed he finally left. Happy birthday to you and your dad. Are your birthdays on the same day? |

Then the company changed and he's now a tanker captain out of the coast of Texas, two weeks on, two off. It's hard- he missed my wedding, and countless holidays, birthdays,etc. Not to mention getting the ships way out of hurricanes way while the wife and kids stayed back home without him. And all this while commuting from Biloxi. Congrats on your Dad's retirement. |

I retired last November at the age of 55 and am by no means rich either but I thouroughly enjoy my life as a retiree. Now, if you can introduce him to the joys of triathloning, that would be GREAT!  |
