Comments:

This was a run out on Trout Creek, I'm familiar with the trails because I used to ride my MTB out there. The race started immediately on a hill. By the first mile my legs were burning already. Up a hill, off a shell road, down the hill, and onto the trails. I liked it. A gazillion roots and straw and a pretty lake or two. Then off to a grassy knoll, up a soft sand hill that's maybe 2 feet across. Then down the other end on soft sand. Out and around the pretty trails. A gal from my running club came back looking for me, and paced me on a mad sprint to the finish where I passed 3 people, including the woman who was walking faster than I was running. If I had that much left on the end, I would of run faster.
What would you do differently?:

go faster.
Post race
Warm down:

breathe. pant. breathe. gatorade. water. Hi, Jeff! pant. breathe.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to learn to maximize breathing- I seem to breathe with my chest, taking short shallow breaths which is probably why I get tired so quickly.

Event comments:

Race was clearly marked with little red utility flags. couldn't get lost. There was one sign near the finish that said "It's MONKEY time". WTF does that mean?

Cool, a trail run! I've never done one before...sounds challenging! Since you used to MTB, maybe you should try an Xterra??
