Event warmup:

I warmed up with the pre-race aerobics. It felt great to get moving to the beat of the music in the sunshine.

Comments:

First road race since I began tri-training March 22.

I do not have a HR monitor yet, so I paid attention to RPE. My goal was to run a pace that was steady throughout the race. My goal was 9:30min miles. I feel very good about the race and know that I will increase my speed as I continue to train.

I am ok with not "beating the bridge", I passed quite a number of people who had beat the bridge. I was on pace to beat it, it just went up a bit early, but I was able to run the race as I had planned
What would you do differently?:

I will run faster next year and beat the bridge!
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of fast walking, gradually decreasing.

Event comments:

The race benefits junvenile diabetes and it was fun to see many different teams, family and corporate, running.

Course: The course was mostly flat, through residential neighborhoods, around University District, and finished inside Husky Stadium (UW). At the two mile mark there is a draw bridge. The draw bridge was to open 20 minutes after the last wave start. Hence the race name "Beat the Bridge". The last wave logjammed at the start so I did not cross the official start line for about 40 seconds.....then the bridge opened 18 minutes and 30 seconds (according to a fellow racer who was at the draw bridge when it went opened). I was one of many surprised runners accustomed to "beating the bridge" who did NOT beat it this year! The nice thing was that there was a water station and plenty of room to keep moving while we waited for the bridge to close. I forgot to check my watch to see how much time it added to my race time.
