Supervillian.

Actually, my tax return says I'm in the Import/Export business (he, he). You'd think that having the various henchmen, cronies, minions, lackeys, and toadies would make things easier and give me more time to train, but you simply would not believe the ammount of back-stabbing (literally), gossip, petty squabbles and incompetence that I have to manage. It takes a toll. Just when you think you have your latest plan all together....along comes some doofus hero-type in a tuxedo and  who do you think has to come up with a way to dispose of the body.......that's right....yours truly. For the ammount of money and intimidation that I have to lay out to get the help I have you'd think that they could figure that kind of thing out on their own.....(sigh)

Oh well, life goes on. There are always new plans to be devised and evil to do.  A word to the wise though buy lots of salt (wink)

Actually I'm a librarian

I'm an RN working in poison control. I work M-F, 8 hr shifts, which is a big departure from when I worked overnight 12s in the ER. I have much more time for training and a normal life now.

Electrical Engineer.  I work as a contractor for the government (uncle sam).  Work schedule is flexible (somewhat).  The trick for me is working around my home life.  My wife works full time (ICU RN) and we have six kids (five at home ages 14yrs to 18 months).

Most of my workouts are with stolen time or in between piano lessons/scouts etc. or whatever the event of the  moment is.

Hey, another internal medicine physician here. In practice for 9 years now. Work 60 hrs./wk average. 3 kids under 6. Early am is the only way for me-4:30 am on the weekends lot of times. I agree that flexibility is the key. Fit things in anywhere and anyway you can. I also know that I can't compete with those who have more time to train, so I just compete against myself and the clock.

I am a system analyst with a software outsourcing company. I work normal office hours from 08:30hr - 18:00hr. But 2 to 3 times a week, I have to work till 21:00hr. Will squeeze most of my training either before or after work. I did most of my long distance running and cycling over the weekend.

On top of that I volunteer as a museum docent in the Singapore Art Museum and I row on Saturdays with my buddies. On weekends I would also bring my mom and aunt (both on wheel chair) out to the beach for a stroll. I would squeeze my weekly marketing for groceries on Saturdays so that I can do my cycling, running or races on Sunday morning.

I am a mechanical engineer for a nanotechnology company. I work in the process equipment division and am tasked with the mechanical design of machines that use ion beam technology to make data storage equipment. Basically, I make (design) the machines that make the magnet head in your hard drive. It's your basic 8:30a - 5:30p job, but I usually end up putting in some OT.

My wife is real good with my training. She realizes it's something I need to do. Actually, it has helped our relationship. Now, instead of coming home from a tough day of work and plunking down on the couch in a pissy mood, I come home, go out for a run/bike and that helps me sort out whatever was bugging me. The key is that I also print a calendar up every month and leave it on the fridge. This way she knows exactly what my training for that day is (or if I'm free) and how long I'll be out. It also helps me because every time I finish a training session, I get to cross it off the calendar. You'd be amazed at how efficient of a motivator that is.

heymickey - I think you need to schedule things a little tighter. I stronly recommend my calendar method. I make it with work/personal obligations in mind and have built in the flexibility to move w/o's around a little bit if life happens. Believe me, it really works.

Do you need paid consultants to come help ride/evaluate the end product? (beta testers for bike trails - BTFBT)

sorry for the highjack

I'm a recovering journalist enjoying my 8-5 job as a public relations coordinator at UGA's college of ag. I love having weekends free. After three years of working every other Saturday and working until about 9 p.m. or midnight, depending on the crisis (I was managing editor at a small daily), I can finally have a social life, which will probably end if I get into grad school in 2007 (photography, hopefully). My hubby and I don't have kids yet, which helps. I imagine it's going to get a lot more complicated when little ones come along.

I'm a copywriter at a radio station - I write commercials for a living. On a freelance basis, I do voiceover work from my home studio... commercials, corporate videos, etc. And in my spare (??) time, I am working on a degree in Communication Studies.

Like everyone else, I don't have a lot of time for training, so I squeeze mine in wherever I can. Fortunately, I work across the street from the Y, so that helps.. and I have a very supportive SO who works around my schedule and makes me dinner and stuff.

I'm a chaplain resident at a hospital. I work mostly in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It can be a very emotionally draining job. Working out is the best way to keep me sane. Mostly I work 8-4 everyday. But at least once a week I have to do a 28 hour shift, which throws off my sleep schedule and my workout schedule. But overall, it's not a bad schedule for making time for workouts. Plus, I don't have kids to worry about in the evenings so after work my time belongs solely to me.

I work as a Resident Inspector for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  I work a first 40 schedule that is a bit flexible.  I can play around with it somewhat, but they like me to be here "during normal working hours".

No, I'm not Homer Simpson, I make sure Homer is doing his job properly.  Now THAT should scare you.  I have a 45 min commute each way, so I try and get my training done before I get home.  That way when I'm home, I'm done.  Since the plant is in the middle of nowhere, it works to my advantage for biking.

Plus it REALLY helps that I have a super supportive wife and only 2 - 4 legged kids (Dog and Cat)

I was an overworked and underpayed NYPD Police Ofiicer for about 6 years. After waiting 10 years I was hired by a local Police Department. I now work 12 hour tours from 7pm to 7am. It works out to be 12 work days a month which gives me plenty of time to train.

I am an athletic trainer with a local high school. I work an average of 60 hours/week. I am pretty busy early in the morning and late in the afternoon, but i can usually get a good workout in at lunch. I also ride/lift weights early in the morning, so I try to get 2 workouts in a day.

I am chemical engineer. I work at a small consulting firm (7 people) in the petroleum refining industry.

I do both design and technical service work in the hydroprocessing and reforming areas of oil refinery. So basically, I design and service units that make diesel and gasoline.

I often think about transitioning in to something else, like being a bike mechanic or something, but I don't know what yet. I wouldn't mind owning my own business.

Wow, some of you have some really interesting jobs!  I am a Project Manager for a large global IT company.  I telecommute (ok, I work from home) so I have some flexibility in my schedule.  I do most of my training before 7am but occasionally I do sneak out for training during my lunch time.

I'm a project manager for the software applications group of a major systems integrator (and, most likely, the manufacturer of your printer).

I started out doing application programming, but moved into the management role after I realized that it is better to delegate the responsibility for getting things done than to actually have to do them yourself.

Due to the fact that I work with a lot of virtual teams, I have gaps of time during the day to get out and train for a couple of hours here and there.  I also do some 6am training b/c that is when my gym first opens.  I wish I had a 24 hour gym closer to my house.

Grad Student in Evolutionary Biology, but really I study Ethology. (Translation: I take classes sometimes, and the rest of the time I follow monkeys - see avatar for last group of monkeys - around the forest studying any aspect of their social behavior I think is interesting.)

It's great. I have a high work load, but virtually no structure at this point. The earliest most profs want to teach is 10:30, so plenty of time for workouts in the morning (without joining the 4:30 club). And classes are usually over by 5, but not always. Anyway, the gym is open to midnight, so I can always get a dreadmill or stat bike in late at night if I need to.

I started out the year being too busy to train, but started to hate my life so much that I realized I was to busy/stressed not to train. Now I have an outlet for whenever my advisor (or other assorted profs) annoy me. The real problem isn't fitting in training, it's detatching myself from the BT forums long enough to get work done.

speaking of work...

I'm an elementary school teacher...I've taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. I love what I do!! But, this year I've been able to take a year off to stay home with my new baby. However, I still need to get up at 5am to workout before my baby wakes up and my husband goes to work. It sucks, but it works.

i'm unemployed

i'm a stay at home mom. i hear you on the sleep thing. the last few nights i've only managed a very interupted 5 hours each night due to fiona having a bit of a cold. other than being on the job 24 hours a day and not getting enough sleep, being at home makes training pretty easy. jogging stroller, burley, trainer. getting to the pool is the hardest part.

Right now I'm an analyst (in training!) at a real estete development company. I kind of fell into the job because of a friend who is a VP here.

For the past 5 years I was at home with my kids. Before that I was a teacher - elementary special-ed then 2nd grade. I'm hoping to get back to that in the next year or two.

getting to the pool is the hardest part.

Especially when yours is being demolished.

I'm a financial consultant with a very large health insurance company.  Its a combo analyst/consultant role - we work with our largest customers to help them control costs and/or shift/mitigate trends in their health care programs.  Really, we're just trying to get them to drink more of the KoolAid in order to keep them as customers.

I'm quite new to the serious training routine.  I usually have no problem fitting in one workout a day but my training is calling for 4 or 5 two-a-days a week with one off day.  I'm wondering whether I'm going to be able to handle that kind of volume with work and my other extra-curricular commitments.  Currently, I'm singing in a barbershop quartet and just started rehearsals for an opera with the MN Opera.  Like everyone else, I'm going to have to make some sacrifices and/or hard decisions about my training - at least in the short term.  Fortunately, my work is very flexible and could probably accomodate my crazy schedule.
