Can you patch a hole in tubeless tires? My old bike had tubes and my new bike doesnt. I have been riding around with the same old patch kit I had on the old bike and was just thinking that it may be kind of pointless.

Yup, you can, but it's probably not something you want to do on the road...unless you've got a couple of hours to kill, and you happen to be carrying a razor blade, needle and sew-up thread.  Repairing tubulars is a job best left for chilly winter nights when your wife is out food shopping and the kids are plugged into the PS2.  Retire to the dungeon too, because the exercise often results in much "blue language" that the little ones might not want to hear.  Then again, maybe they do, so they can snicker at Dad!

You can carry a tube of sealant on the road.  It's kind of like fix-a-flat for tubulars.  Tufo makes some but I haven't tried it yet.  You can also use it as a preventive measure by using 1/2 a tube in your tubulars.

Hopefully you won't have to use it any time soon, but if you do I would like to hear your experience with it. A guy I rode with a lot rode on Tufo's and used it and it didn't work real well - when it was hot it didn't work at all........I really like the concept, but his experience was not real positive.

vortmax - 2006-04-03 11:43 PM you are talking about tubular and not UST right?

Yeah...when I saw this post I was thinking UST...clincher tires w/out tubes. Fairly standard in new high-end MTBs, just now starting to appear on the road (still mostly in R&D). UST tires can be patched, but the best solution for on-the-road repairs is carrying a spare tube (you can use tubes with UST tires).

There are different versions of the Grand Prix, but to the best of my knowledge, they are all clinchers. Meaning you have a "standard" tire with a tube inside. The tube can be patched with a patch kit.

FYI:

A tubular tire has the tube encased inside the tire. Also referred to as a "sew-up". These can be repaired, but not roadside as others have pointed out. Most people these days just toss them and replace.

A tubeless, literally has no tube. Like your car tire.

Tubeless???

I'm thinking you have sewups? Does your tire look like a round Tube with an inflation point, and do you glue it to your rim?

If so, then you need to take a spair tire with you and a way to inflate it when you peel the punctured tire off the rim and put the spair on (the glue remaining should be good enough to get home on if you inflate properly and get the tire on straight).

If it is indeed tubeless, you should be able to remove the nipple from the rim and insert a tube into the clincher. I.E go from tubeless to tubed....
