Subject: nail damage and chlorine
Hi all,

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not the prissy type. However, last time I was swimming regularly, my fingernails went to hell (started splitting and I had to file them down to nothing). I haven't started swimming just yet. Right now my fingernails are short but in good condition. I do not normally use nail polish. Is there anything I can do to keep them from self destructing in the pool?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Cyndy

I don't wear nail polish and my nails are usually brittle and frail.  I started taking biotin supplements and now I can swim and don't have to worry about the chlorine destroying them.  You can get biotin supplements in the vitamin section of almost any grocery store.  I highly recommend them!

Thanks runner girl. How much biotin do you take? Also as a public service for everyone, you can get great prices on high quality supplements/vitamins etc at puritan.com, check them out.

I just take one a day. I  can't remember what the dose it- I'll have to check my bottle.  My nails are super strong and they are gorwing so fast I have to trim them once a week.  That stuff works!

I keep my nails short and always have. I do notice that when my protein intake is high (more likely, just right), they grow very fast and anything that looks bad about them is gone in a few weeks.

I am also taking biotin but they haven't grown enough yet for me to see a difference. I asked my doc about my flaking and splitting nails...he hadn't heard of it but looked it up for me. The medical book had pics that looked just like my hands and said that it is related to dry skin... suggested using some kind of moisturizer on the nails themselves regularly. I started that and have definitely seen some improvement. I'm hoping that between that and the biotin I won't have to worry about it anymore after they grow past the current splits.
