Pre-race routine:

good sleep. Up at 5 am. Loaded car up and went to location.

Set up transition. Pretty easy, routine.
Ran about a half mile to warm up at 6:25.
Ate bagel w/peanut butter at about 6:30. Ate banana at 6:45.
Swam 100 warm up at 6:50.
Event warmup:

Ran .5 mi at 6:25 am
Swam 100 m at 6:50 am
Light stretch.
Swim
  • 06m 14s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was pretty good, but the number of people made the water pretty choppy. That kind of took me out of my normal relaxed swimming rhythm, which I didn't really get back into until there was about 100 m remaining.

The full lanes made it an awesome way to do the pool swim. Much better than swimming back and forth in the same lane.
What would you do differently?:

Try to lengthen out and relax.
Transition 1
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

Cold day, so spent more time putting on clothes - tights and a long sleeved shirt (and body glide). Probably could have gone without the tights . . .
What would you do differently?:

Skip the tights. Didn't wind up getting cold anyway.
Bike
  • 42m 19s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Glutes were tight and sore. Didn't realize that until I got on the bike. Overcompensated with the quads and hams. Got out of the big chain ring for the second loop and felt better. Really didn't notice any soreness prior to the race.
What would you do differently?:

Stretch more? Ride a bit as part of my warm up?
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Not a bad transition for me.
Run
  • 30m 4s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good starting out. About a mile into it, got tired & legs felt sore. Was just working out of that at the end of the run.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. Have a better bike so the legs wouldn't be so tired? Not real sure what happened here, but was kind of disappointed in the run. Had done a brick a week ahead of time with a longer bike and a longer run that averaged better times on both of them.
Post race
Warm down:

walk, stretch really good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tired legs mostly. Not sure why. Was still active during the week, but nothing too long or tiring. Really felt good Friday evening so was kind of surprised that I felt not so good on Saturday.

Event comments:

Good, well organized race. Light on the post race events, but it was 50 degrees and the wind was blowing like crazy, so no one wanted to hang around anyway.
