Luckily my older brothers were into bands like Blood Sweat and Tears and Chicago.

"Saturday in the Park" doesn't seem to bother mothers so much.

Being brought home in a cop car does get their attention though.

My 14 year old daughter is in to classic rock. Initially she really liked Nirvana and devoured the Kurt Cobain book...now that'll make you stop & wonder about your children. Anyway, we've had long conversations about all of it & I'm ok with it...I think she even used the same comment you use with your mom...

"Mom, its just a cool record. That's all. I had no thoughts of suicide or hell or anything..."

Recently she has become a Led Zep fan & has reintroduced me to their music...it has given us another reason to connect.

Beginnertriathlete, I like it here!

My folks we're pretty cool about music, but I had a friend with a mother that bought into the whole subliminal "devil worship" messages in secular music (yes - she said secular). Poor lady would actually rewind casette tapes so she could listen to the music backwards.

Anyone remember that SNL skit where congress is passing a bill to outlaw subliminal messages in music and they end up listening to a record and closing the scene out with the commitee chairman going, "I move that we all worship satin?" I still chuckle at that one!

When I was 11, I told my dad that I wanted to be a Bond Girl when I grew up.

I wasn't allowed to watch James Bond after that. I wonder why ...

My mom wasn't too happy when I brought home Suicidal Tendencies and Violent Femmes in middle school. I'm sure she didn't appreciate me playing "why can't I get just one f*ck.." at my birthday party either. Luckily, I was also listening to Cat Stevens and James Taylor at the same time so I think she must have known I was just testing out all sorts of music. She was probably relieved when I went from that to Crosby Stills & Nash, Traffic and Grateful Dead.

My daughters still hold it against me that they know (and can play) Bach and Mozart better than they know rock music.  The training to learn to be a competent classical musician is just as time consuming and takes even more expensive equipment than triathlons (and there are competitions too.)   I wonder if the musical and academic emphasis in our house when they were growing up that pretty much eliminated time for other music and TV was more good than bad.  I don't really know.  They turned out highly academic but not too much into playing.  All three Geezerettes are/were very good pianists.

I am typing right now on an old computer that passed through the hands of Geezerettes #3 then #2.  It has literally thousands of hours of all kinds of rock, punk, rap, jazz, but no classical.  I had to unload 30 CD's of MP3 files to make some room for the stuff I need right now.  Take note, kids.  I didn't just erase it.  I like that stuff too but don't know much about it.

Growing up the youngest of 8 kids in the 70's had some benefits. My brothers listened to some cool music. I also discovered they used their albums to clean and then hide their stash. This was one of my favorite finds. Oh, it had good music too!

Double albums were best for that activity.  The Wall still has a strange scent.
