Total Time = 3h 24m 50s
Overall Rank = 116/132
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 4/4
Pre-race routine:

got stuff ready the night before, amended check list to include takeing the usat card to packet pick up.

Got to transition area when it opened, got a good spot got everything set up relaxed and had some coffee.
Event warmup:

Stretched a little got in the water and swam just a few strokes just prior to start to get used to the cold.
Swim
  • 32m 57s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

my goggles kept filling up with water. I've used em with this setup before no problem, train weekly no problem. I think I may have had the strap too far down the back of my head. In Kona I'm using a new pair I have.
What would you do differently?:

Do a longer swim warm up and wear new goggles
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

stuck my foot in between the strap and the top of the shoe at first, not a real big deal time wise all in all.

46/132
3/4
What would you do differently?:

stick my foot in the shoe right the first time.

Bike
  • 1h 47m 12s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 13.91 mile/hr
Comments:

My legs felt really fatigued from the start to the finish of the bike.

At about Mile 7 I got a flat tire, that went about as well as it could.

I'm not sure but I think it took about 10:30 to change the tire
What would you do differently?:

I did a real hard interval run on Tuesday. Yesterday I didn't do any exercise or stretching. I think both of those played a roll.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Had one snafuu with the helmet, one of the chin straps caught on my necklace. Probably added a couple of seconds to the transition.

46/132
1/4
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 01m 49s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a lot of stiffness in my legs at first, sore ankle, calf hurt. I started feeling pretty good at about mile 5. It could be a good sign for my HIM or it could be that I was just happy it was about over. :)
What would you do differently?:

Back to the interval on Tuesday and no light run or stretch Saturday.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My general poor physical condition.

Event comments:

The course is very challenging, out of the transition area on the bike you have about a half mile steep uphill. It's got some killer hills and wind can be an issue.

I really like the run, I like trail and gravel roads way better than pavement or asphalt any day. It's slower running but the same for everyone.

Perfect race before the HIM to sort out those little issues - the goggles in particular.
Its a great boost mentally that you felt good out there on the run.

Shame about the puncture though. These things happen and you took it in your stride.

Great racing, Jim!

You're too hard on yourself, you had a good swim despite the googles.  The tire thingie is a bummer, but you stuck with it.

I'll check in before your 1/2.
